The Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) has announced new sanctions on Fawaz al-Akhras “for having materially assisted, sponsored, or provided financial, material, or technological support for, or goods or services to or in support of, Bashar al-Assad.” Akhras, who is Bashar al-Assad’s father in law, helped the former president evade sanctions and skirt normal international diplomatic channels by acting as a liaison between the regime and other countries at times. More specifically, as the founder of the British Syrian Society, Akhras was in an ideal position to act as a liaison between the regime and the UK.
