South Carolina executed an inmate tonight on death row by firing squad for the first time in its history, and for the first time in the United States since 2010. Brad Keith Sigmon, aged 67, who was charged and sentenced to two death sentences for the 2001 duel-murder of David and Gladys Larke, aged 62 and 59, respectively, with a baseball bat; requested execution by firing squad after being scared of both the electric chair and lethal injection. For his final meal, Sigmon requested Kentucky Fried Chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes with gravy, biscuits, cheesecake and sweet tea. Sigmon used his final statement to decry the death penalty, stating that he found it unjustified under the New Testament for him to pay with his life for the murders of David and Gladys Larke, claiming that they were no longer living under the Old Testament and no one had the authority to take lives except for God. The firing squad opened fire at 6:05pm and Brad Keith Sigmon was declared dead at 6:08.

As U.S. President Donald J. Impeached South Korean President Yoon Seok-Yeol was released today from the detention center he’s been held in since his initial arrest on January 15 of this year. The prosecutor’s office declined to appeal the release order on the grounds that said order might have been unconstitutional due to the court’s ruling. While president Yoon previously relinquished his presidential powers, he has voiced a desire to still have a say in South Korea’s foreign policy outlook going forward.

North Korea today unveiled what is believed to be their first ever nuclear-powered strategic guided-missile submarine, under construction at an “undisclosed” shipyard alongside several other semi-modern to modern naval vessels. Moon Keun-sik, a South Korean submarine expert, said that the vessel appeared to be a 6,000-ton-class or 7,000-ton-class submarine which can carry about 10 missiles, stating that the term “strategic guided-missile” suggested that it would carry nuclear-capable ballistic missiles. Despite North Korea possessing an aging fleet of roughly 70 diesel-powered submarines, it is not known how such a heavily sanctioned country could have obtained a nuclear reactor, though it is believed it was likely provided or they had assistance from Russia, possibly in exchange for them recently joining Russia’s war against Ukraine.
