Both Canada and the European Union announced major retaliatory tariffs today against the United States, in response to U.S. President Trump’s 25% tariff on all aluminum and steel imports, which went into effect last night at 12:01am.
Canada, which acts as the United States’ largest supplier of steel, announced a 25% reciprocal tariff of U.S. steel, as well as increased taxes on hundreds of items imported from the U.S. into Canada, including tools, computers and servers, display monitors, sports equipment and cast-iron products, for a total of roughly $20 billion in tariffs.
The European Union has announced a two-phase response to the recent tariffs, stating that on April 1st they will reimplement tariffs placed on the United States during U.S. President Trump’s first term between 2018 and 2020, but suspended under the Biden Administration, which at the time included major taxes in American liquor, motorcycles and boats. Then on April 13th they will impose additional taxes and duties on roughly $20 billion in U.S. imports into the E.U.

The widely anticipated launch of the SpaceX/NASA Crew-10 mission from the Kennedy Space Center has been scrubbed in the last minutes before launch due to a hydraulics issue with the ground equipment. The mission was set to finally allow the return of two astronauts, Barry “Butch” Wilmore and Sunita “Suni” Williams. The two astronauts have been in space at the International Space Station (ISS) for more than nine months after Boeing’s Starliner was deemed too unsafe to bring them home due to issues with the thrusters and was returned to Earth uncrewed. The next launch window will likely be tomorrow, with the astronauts returning home Friday hopefully.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will be in Canada to attend the G7 Foreign Ministers Meeting in Charlevoix, Canada. The topic of discussion, among other things (highlighted by the German Federal Foreign Office in the second image), will also likely be the tenuous trade relations between the U.S., the European Union (EU), and Canada. Secretary Rubio is set to meet the Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joy first thing tomorrow. This comes as both Canada and the European Union have now announced retaliatory tariffs on goods worth billions. In total, more than $40 billion in targeted U.S. goods has been announced by Canada and the EU alone.

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Kursk Oblast of Western Russia earlier today, meeting with Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov and other senior military leaders, in what appears to be an attempt at a “victory tour” following the controlled-withdrawal of the Ukrainian Armed Forces from most of their positions across region over the last few days. During the visit, Putin was seen wearing a Russian military uniform for the first time publicly since the annexation of Crimea in 2014, likely to signal his vicinity to the “frontline” of the war to the southwest.

Rheinmetall AG, the German arms manufacturer which has seen massive revenue growth over the last few years, has expressed interest in purchasing the Volkswagen Osnabrück GmbH automobile factory, stating that it would be “very suitable” for conversion to military production; with tank factories required heavy-duty cranes and corresponding load-bearing capacities, all of which is held by the plant in Osnabrück.
Armin Papperger, the CEO of Rheinmetall, has stated that the company is planning to repurpose several of its own automotive plants for military production, while also looking at buying sites from other carmakers including Volkswagen; with this taking place as Germany as well as most of Europe has declared a major rearmament effort, due to fears of abandonment from the United States in addition to continued aggression from Russia.
