Nation Building in Georgia and the Soviet Experience, Bryan Gigantino

A fundamental paradox of how Georgian nationhood is conceptualized today is the seventy year experience of Soviet Georgia. On the one hand, Soviet Georgia was considered the  “privileged” union republic in the Soviet Union, and was met with a steep economic and social decline following independence in 1991. Yet over the past thirty years, anti-Soviet memory politics have become a central tool of nation building in Georgia, used as everything from an explanation for national hardships such as war, ethnic conflict, and poverty, to a supposed anti-thesis of the essence of the Georgian national identity.

But what does this Soviet experience really tell us about Georgian nationhood today?

Bryan Gigantino is a Tbilisi-based writer who focuses on Soviet history and the post-Soviet politics. He is a cohost of the podcast Reimagining Soviet Georgia. Originally from the Bay Area, he now lives in Tbilisi, Georgia.

На встрече мы обсудим основные вехи этого пути, что было сделано, что могло было быть сделано, но не было и почему. Какие печальные ошибки шаг за шагом привели из надежды на новое будущее России к полному отчаянию.

Нина Боер, адвокат с 20-летним стажем юридической практики в России, управляющий партнер юридической компании в Санкт-Петербурге. To rule them all: dark fantasy and medievalism in modern Russian politics

During this lecture, I will give an update on the Феод project – a series of gaming novels based on the popular saying in recent years that the modern Russian reality reflects that of the Middle Ages.

There are many interpretations of Russia’s reality in the art world, and how it attempts to penetrate the essence of totalitarian power. At the same time, the idea of ​​Russia as the Middle Ages exists at the level of a meme. While this meme is certainly amusing, it’s also frighteningly real. This is why we decided to imagine what would happen if we made the effort to analyse the events of recent years in the context of neo-feudalism.

The war (which caught many of us off guard) now appears to be a terrible confirmation of both our conjectures and the natural development of ‘feudal’ events – which we were still treating in allegorical terms. It turned out, unfortunately, that much of what seemed to us a metaphor and hypertrophy has long since acquired flesh and turned into what is now an everyday reality. We don’t quite know what to do with this yet, but it seems strange to ignore the result. So, let's talk about it.

In Russia, Sasha was engaged in protecting the rights of patients with mental disorders and mental disabilities, staged performances about repressive drug policy and torture in colonies, did street actions, led an art laboratory and gave lectures.

В ближайшую пятницу украинский поэт и общественный деятель Ярослав Минкин, возглавляющий молодежную общественную организацию СТАН, представит эссе-исследование «СТАН за МИР. Как мы пытаемся строить мир во время войны в Украине». Эта работа была написана практиком для практиков и была основана на многолетнем опыте проведения открытых диалогов к Международному дню мира в Украине и Европейской неделе действий против расизма.
В дни, когда война вынудила 14 миллионов украинцев покинуть свои дома, перед гражданским обществом встал вопрос: как построить мир во время войны в Украине?
За время своей активисткой деятельности автор исследования принимал непосредственное участие в разработке проектных предложений и методологий, отвечал за общую координацию и фасилитировал самые сложные диалоги как в Украине, так и за ее пределами.
На пятничной лекции мы вспомним историю открытых диалогов и акций солидарности, узнаем больше об украинском опыте подобных практик, а также обсудим подходы к организации миротворческих инициатив на низовом уровне.

Homo Soveticus: are they still around?
In this talk from Dr. George Mchedlishvili, Associate Professor of International Relations at the European University (Tbilisi), we will learn about the elements of mentality that characterized late 70s and 80s, which, according to Dr Mchedlishvili, have gradually evaporated or were forcefully "driven out" as well as those that still stubbornly cling.
The widely advertised tasks of the Soviet Union, necessary to achieve the main goal - the construction of communism - included the creation of a "new type of person." It had to be a conscious, "morally stable" and industrious creator. What a chimera communism was is clearly seen in what kind of "human material" was actually produced. This type is diverse, several sub-types can be distinguished, and the collapse of world socialism was largely predetermined by the deficiencies of that very human capital.
Naturally, these people, who gained independence in 1991, have not gone away, and even a generation after the collapse of the USSR, when almost half of the population of the countries of the former empire was born after 1991, we can clearly feel the presence of this "Homo Soveticus", sometimes even in the younger generation. Dr. Mchedlishvili will try to tell, mainly on the example of Georgia, about the aspects of the Soviet mentality that have been overcome, as well as those that are still entrenched in people. And what needs to be done in order to finally overcome the protracted "transitional period" and the "post-Soviet" nature.
Dr. George Mchedlishvili is an Associate Professor of International Relations at the European University (Tbilisi). He has a PhD in Political Science from Tbilisi State University, the thesis was about Ataturk's reforms and how they changed the Turkish society. The courses George has been teaching include "Foreign Policy Analysis", "Post-Soviet States", "Post-Soviet Transition in the South Caucasus", "South Caucasus in Global Politics". Mr. Mchedlishvili was a Carnegie Scholar at Georgetown University (Washington DC) in the spring of 2016, and a Robert Bosch Fellow at Chatham House, in 2013.

Navigating a small NGO in times of polarization and geopolitical shifts
Giorgi Arziani, founder of the Tbilisi School for Social Research, will talk about the obstacles and challenges of running a small Georgian think-tank against a backdrop of polarization, democratic backsliding and regional war. The Tbilisi School is a grass-roots organization which focuses on evidence-based policy solutions for developing Georgia with a particular focus on the de-occupation and unification. During his talk, Giorgi will tell us about the origins of the Tbilisi School in the context of current affairs. He will also dissect the contradictory narratives on these conflicts and recent history.
Giorgi Arziani is a refugee from occupied Abkhazia. He is a consultant for the Swedish National Financial Management Authority, which assists the Ministry of Finance of Georgia in strengthening the financial management and control system in the public sector.

For our lecture this Friday, Kamran Mammadli will come to talk to us about the National Liberation movement, nationalism, and minority rights in Georgia.

The collapse of the Soviet Union resulted in Georgian independence. At the same time, the national liberation movement of Georgia took a deep dive into nationalism, to the detriment of all ethnic minorities. The slogan ‘Georgia for Georgians’, is aimed not only at supporting the independence of Georgia, but having Georgia for ‘real’ Georgians, meaning ethnic Georgians and Orthodox Christians. Even though this narrative has been rejected by the Georgian elites, the existing reality and challenges in the face of ethnic minorities are the echo of its legacy from the 1990s.

Kamran Mammadli works with the Social Justice Center, where his role is to identify, analyse, and bring into the political agenda the visible, hidden, and invisible forms of power that keep minority ethnic groups oppressed and excluded. He explores the challenges, needs, and concerns of these groups. Kamran is also one of the founders of Salam Platform, an organisation that works on community-organising and power-building among ethnic minorities.
