The Israeli military has begun the ground invasion of Gaza—even if, like Vladimir Putin, Benjamin Netanyahu prefers to use another term to describe it. This catastrophic decision will result in the slaughter of unthinkable numbers of Palestinians while further endangering everyone throughout the region.

Two decades ago, the United States military invaded Afghanistan and Iraq, blindly seeking revenge for the attacks of September 11, 2001. The occupations of those countries cost nearly a million lives, driving more people to join the jihadists. The subsequent rise of the Islamic State showed that the invasions had only strengthened the forces that the invaders claimed to be attacking. When the Taliban recaptured Afghanistan in 2021, it confirmed how pointless the carnage had been.

After decades of colonial violence and apartheid policies, the Israeli military is embarking on the same course today. We should do everything in our power to cut off the flow of military aid that is enabling them to pursue a policy of ethnic cleansing.

If the movement to stop the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq had succeeded, we would have saved countless lives and averted countless tragedies. The stakes are even higher today.

“Contrary to the promises of Israeli politicians, neither the apartheid policies of the Israeli government nor the brutality of the Israeli military have brought safety to anyone in the region. There is no way to stop to the bloodshed without putting an end to the colonial oppression of Palestinians.

“In any struggle, those who have the most power and access to resources have the most leverage in determining what form the conflict will take. The Israeli government has exponentially more arms and funding than any Palestinian group; across the course of decades, it has inflicted exponentially more casualties. Some of its staunchest supporters are Christian nationalists and neoliberals seeking leverage in the oil-rich Mideast. Any effort towards change in the region must begin by confronting their support.”

Should anyone claim that “ethnic cleansing” is too strong a phrase to describe what the Israeli government is trying to do in Gaza, we direct you to this document, just leaked from the Israeli Ministry of Intelligence. It explicitly recommends the forcible permanent transfer of the entire Palestinian population of the Gaza Strip to the Sinai peninsula.

This is the textbook definition of ethnic cleansing—on a scale of millions of people.

A few days before a neo-Nazi demonstration in Athens, Greece that is supposed to bring in fascists from around Europe, anti-fascists marched to the planned location of the demonstration and destroyed a monument on Heraklion Avenue erected by the fascist political party Golden Dawn.
