"The other day, our friend, who created covers for many of our books, signed himself with the pseudonym Pavel Korshunov, committed suicide. He left Russia a few years ago, fleeing repression and torture, ended up in Ukraine, unsuccessfully tried to get asylum there and was forced to flee to Poland after the start of the war. The realization of the beginning of a new legalization process and the previous negative experience turned out to be unbearable for him.

"There is a lot of bitterness and anger in us right now. We hate the state for forcing people into hiding under the threat of torture and prison. We hate the state because it breaks the psyche of our comrades. We hate the state because it has created borders that are not easy for many of us to cross. For the fact that within these boundaries we are obliged to spend our efforts on obtaining documents, instead of just living and creating. How will the outcome of the war shape the prospects for social struggle in Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia?

We've translated a text from Russia exploring the perils of identifying with the Ukrainian government, emphasizing the responsibility liberals share for the situations in Russia and Belarus today, and discussing the opportunities and obstacles facing revolutionary movements in the region.

The war in Ukraine is a step towards a world of permanent militarization, in which the Israeli model of militarized policing will become the norm and brute force will be the chief means of resolving political differences. Massive refugee populations displaced by wars and economic and ecological crises will be segregated according to national and ethnic hierarchies—received into welcoming homes, crowded into internment camps, or pushed back into the borderlands to die.

In response, anarchists seek to establish solidarity between anti-war, anti-nationalist, and anti-state movements across all borders and lines of difference. Rather than identifying with any government or capitalist coterie (and pointing to the misdeeds of some to excuse the misdeeds of others), we aim to build the capacity to interrupt war and exploitation via grassroots action. Anticipating the challenges that social movements throughout the region will face after this war could help us to set our priorities.
