MERCEDES TEAMMATES BATTLE⚔️

Contrary to 2022, this year Hamilton outperformed Russell in almost every metric:
-59 more points
-Ahead in 15/22 races
-6 podiums vs 2
-Best finish (P2 in Mexico)
-A pole position
-Fewer retirements

Who will be on top next year?🤔

FERRARI TEAMMATES BATTLE⚔️

Despite not classifying in 5 races, Leclerc finished the season ahead of Sainz

The two were close in the races (12 vs 10), but LEC was the better qualifier (15 vs 7)

Both got poles, but only SAI got a win

MCLAREN TEAMMATES BATTLE⚔️

Rookie Piastri was no match for the experienced Norris:

Norris:
-Got over twice his points (205 vs 97)
-Qualified ahead in 15 races
-Finished ahead in 17 races
-Got 7 podiums: just 2 off Perez in the RB19!

Both got P2 in qualifying and races.
Do you think the gap will close significantly next year?🤔

In general Norris received the updates sooner than Piastri, even though for most of the season they were driving identical cars.

Norris' outperformance is clear, even though IMHO Piastri did a nice debut.

ASTON TEAMMATES BATTLE⚔️

Alonso markedly overperformed Stroll in every metric:
-Almost thrice his points (206 vs 74)
-Finished ahead in 18 races
-Qualified ahead in 19 races
-Got 8 vs 0 podiums!
-Less retirements
-P2 in qualifing and race

Will the gap reduce next year?🤔

ALPINE TEAMMATES BATTLE⚔️

Ocon retired in six races: the most of any driver last year!
Despite that, he still finished ahead of GAS in 10 races

Gasly was better in qualifying: 14 vs 8
They both got a podium each and qualified on the 2nd row

WILLIAMS TEAMMATES BATTLE⚔️

The least balanced lineup, by far: ALB and SAR seemed to be driving two different cars!

Albon:
-Qualified ahead at EVERY race
-Finished ahead in 18 races
-Got 96.4% of the team's points

Do you think the gap will close significantly next year?🤔

HAAS TEAMMATES BATTLE ⚔️

The 'New entry' Hulkenberg outperformed Kevin Magnussen :
- He got P7 in Australia, getting half of the team's points in just one race
- He qualified ahead in 15 races out of 22
- He finished ahead most of the time

Who will be on top next year?

ALFA ROMEO TEAMMATES BATTLE ⚔️

Zhou got the same points as last year (6)
Bottas, instead, had a much worse season (10 points vs last year's 49).

Still, he performed better than Zhou this year as well, especially in qualiying.

FIA banned the 'Inerter' (also called 'J-Damper') in 2022... but WHAT is that? And HOW does it work?🤔

I will give you the answers in this thread... and explain how it could have mitigated porpoising!👀

Car suspensions have two components:

-Spring: applies a force proportional to its deflection➡️'Transmits' the energy of the bump to the car body
-Damper: force proportional to HOW QUICKLY it deflects➡️Dissipates such energy

F1 cars also had the Inerter... but what is it for?

The inerter applies a force proportional to the acceleration of its two extremities

So:
Suspension Deflection➡️Spring Force
Deflection speed➡️Damper Force
Deflection acceleration➡️Inerter Force

Invented in 2002 by a professor, F1 teams quickly adapted it to their needs!

A scheme:
When the suspension extends or compresses, the right ring moves relatively to the left ring↔️

Due to the thread profile, this produces a rotation of the inertial body (in🔴red)

This produces an inertial force proportional to the acceleration between the two rings.

How is this useful?

For any oscillation:
Acceleration: - Deflection*Frequency^2

1)The higher the frequency, the higher the acceleration vs the deflection
2)The acceleration has OPPOSITE sign compared to the deflection

So the Inerter 'contrasts' the spring at high frequencies!

So, the Inerter effectively makes the suspension softer at higher frequencies!

This is the 'holy grail':
-Engineers can use stiffer suspensions➡️More stable aero, more responsive car
-At higher frequency (kerbs/bumps), the suspensions soften➡️Less bouncing on unevenness!

A practical example:

Vertical axis: tyre load oscillation (bad!)
Horizontal: frequency

First, the engineer stiffens the suspension to improve the aero (solid to dashed line)➡️Problem: the peak increases

Then, they employ the inerter (bold line)➡️The peak reduces significantly!

FIA banned the inerter in 2022, on the grounds of cost-reduction🚫

The problem was that neither the FIA nor most teams predicted the porpoising
The Inerter would have been the perfect weapon to fight it! (By having different stiffnesses at lower and higher frequencies).

So that was the Inerter!🛠
