What will the future hold for Red Bull? 👀

1) RB16B ended a 7-season noscript-less slump ('14-'20).
2) Used that momentum to design the most successful F1 car ever (RB19: 21/22 wins!👌).
3) Great start in '24, but strong decline since.🚨

RB16B ('21)
"HONDA back on top"

Evolution of RB16 (hence the 'B' in the name)
The regulated floor area and diffuser design hit them less than Mercedes.

Third year with Honda, and the first one winning a noscript.

Aero-efficient, strong ERS, versatile.

26.6Pts/GP, 11 Wins, WDC

RB18 ('22)
"Ground-Effect Mastery"

RBR aced the new regulations:
- Best concept.
- Intense, effective development (Redesigned sidepods, significant weight reduction, improved reliability).
- Limited porpoising.

Low drag, best floor on the grid➡️WCC🏆

RB19 ('23)
"Flawless"

Strong everywhere:
- Best aero (Low drag AND high downforce: the 'Holy Grail' of aerodynamics).
- Most effective DRS.
- Powerful, reliable engine.

The only weakness? PER (Who still won 2 out of the 3 races that VER didn't win).

RB20 ('24)
"Party Ended Early"

RedBull's 2024 downfall will go down in history:
- Best (almost RB19-level) until Austria.
- Only 3rd fastest afterwards.

3 possibilities:
- RBR was exploiting a grey area;
- Botched development;
- Others catching up quickly.

That's it: I hope you enjoyed the breakdown! 🤩

Will the RB21 perform like the season-start RB20 or the one we saw in the last few months? 🤔

Team points (‘21-24)

🔴 Ferrari lost points in ‘23 compared to ‘22, but recovered well in ‘24.

🟠 Even McLaren had a setback (in ‘22: first year of new regulations).

🟢 Mercedes declined ‘21 to ‘23; minor recovery in ‘24.

🔵 Big downfall for RBR in ‘24: recovery around the corner?

QUALI STATS YOU NEED (Ground-Effect Era, Average % Gap)

Fastest: '22 Ferrari F1-75
Slowest: '22 Williams FW44

Most improved over a year: Aston '23 vs '22 (-1.37%)

ANY RedBull was quick

Ferrari got progressively worse in quali, but their '24 race pace was the best since 2018.

Notice that the field got much closer in 2023 than in 2022, after most teams discarded ineffective design concepts.

If we exclude Sauber, the field got even tighter in 2024, a good sign of the performance convergence under stable regulations.

Which figure surprised you the most? 👀

Throwback to when I reverse-engineered Brembo’s ‘braking power’ calculation! 🤩

F1 brakes do indeed generate well over 2000kW of power… over 3000hp! 😳

(Enough to light up over 100 THOUSANDS LED light bulbs)

Power = Force*Speed

The peak power is generated at the beginning of the braking phase when speed AND deceleration (due to downforce) are highest. 🔥

4.5g of deceleration, but ‘only’ 3.5g of that is due to the brakes: drag (and engine brake) alone account for 1g!

Yes: lifting the throttle off an F1 car can produce a deceleration stronger than the one you’d experience smashing your car's brake pedal! 😳

Follow @FDataAnalysis to have nightmares about high-school physics every night! 😜

(The specific power value obtained depends on the data used: Brembo’s stated value is slightly lower probably because they used a lower speed value.)
