🚫Avoid Touching Non-Maḥrams

«وما مسَّت يد رسول الله -صلَّى الله عليه وسلَّم- يد امرأة إلا امرأةً يملكها» رواه البخاري

ʿĀishah said: “The Prophet ﷺ has never touched a woman’s hand except for his wives and slaves.” [Al-Bukhārī]

Maʿqil bin Yasār ⁽¹⁾ said: "For one of you to take a needle and plunge it into my head is more beloved to me than a woman who is not a maḥram washing my hair.” ⁽²⁾

Shaykh Khālid Al-Ḥāyek commented: “This shows that this matter was considered grave by the companions, which is why it was severely cautioned against.”

📌Benefit: There is another narration from Maʿqil which was narrated in marfūʿ form, as a ḥadīth of the Prophet which says:
لأن يطعن في رأس أحدكم بمخيط من حديد خير له من أن يمس امرأة لا تحل له
“For one of you to be stabbed in the head with an iron needle is better for him than that he should touch a woman who is not permissible for him.”
⚠️This narration is ḍaʿīf (weak). Al-Muḥaddith Aḥmad Shaḥāta Al-Alfī declared it weak in "Al-Takhrījāt Rumḥ Al-Sunnah" (refer 1/8) Also Al-Ḥāyek and Al-ʿAlwān declared it weak, and declared that what is correct is the mawqūf narration from Maʿqil.

[1] Maʿqil bin Yasār was a companion of the Prophet ﷺ. He converted to Islam before Al-Ḥudaybiyyah and participated in Bayʾat al-Riḍwān. He settled in Baṣrah and died there. The "Maʿqil River" in Baṣrah is named after him. It was dug by the order of ʿUmar.

عن معقل موقوفاً عليه من قوله بلفظ: "لأن يعمد أحدكم إلى مخيط فيغرز به في رأسي، أحب إلي من أن تغسل رأسي امرأة ليست مني ذات محرم".
It was narrated by Ibn Abī Shaybah in his "Muṣannaf" (4/15 no. 17310).
