Qatādah (رحمه الله) said:

‎“By Allah سبحانه و تعالى we did not see a man befriend except those who are like him, so befriend the righteous ones from the servants of Allah سبحانه و تعالى, perhaps you can be like them.”

Qur'an 69:18

"The reason that friendships based on Islam and love for the sake of Allah are more solid and everlasting than friendships based on personal interests is because, as humans, our personal interests are constantly changing as time goes on, and we then tend to lose touch with those whom we developed connections with due to those old interests. But when it comes to friendship for the sake of Allah, where Islam is your biggest interest in such a friendship, then Islam is always something that remains important and central to our lives (insha'Allah), so a friendship based on that is never outgrown nor does it get old."
