🇺🇸 Biden after learning of the release of Alex Saab: "It seems that Maduro is making progress in his commitment to free elections"

The president of the United States, Joe Biden, considered this Wednesday that Nicolás Maduro "continues forward" with his commitment to hold democratic elections in the country.

Asked by journalists in Milwaukee about a possible prisoner exchange that would be taking place on Wednesday and about which he did not want to provide information, Biden made this comment about the Venezuelan president.

«It seems that Maduro, so far, is maintaining his commitment to free elections, although he has not yet done so. We have a long way to go, but so far it is good," said the president.

🇨🇳 ❌️ 🇺🇸 China bans export of rare earths processing tech over national security

🔶️ China, the world's top processor of rare earths, on Thursday banned the export of technology to extract and separate the strategic metals, in a further step towards protecting its dominance in several strategic metals.

🔶️ China has significantly tightened rules guiding exports of several metals this year, in an escalating battle with the West over control of critical minerals.

🔶️ The move to protect its rare earth technology comes as Europe and the United States scramble to wean themselves off rare earths from China, which accounts for 90% of global refined output.

🔶️ Rare earths are a group of 17 metals used to make magnets for use in electric vehicles, wind turbines and electronics.

🔶️ China has mastered the solvent extraction process to refine the strategic minerals, which Western rare earth companies have struggled to deploy due to technical complexities and pollution concerns.

🇷🇺🇺🇦 How will the Ukraine war end? Victory against Russia looks unlikely

As the second anniversary of the war approaches, Kyiv is finding it far more difficult to impose its sovereignty on the battlefield, with hopes of imminent victory fading and the focus shifting to ensuring that no further land is lost.

Ukrainian generals said this week that Russia was on the offensive in the east of the country and that troops were being forced to downsize some military operations because of artillery shortages. “We can’t respond to everything the Russians are throwing at us. It’s as painful as hell,” said Yurash.

The scale of Ukraine’s casualties is classified but there is no longer any attempt to disguise that losses are huge. “I don’t even give the new guys call signs any more. Most of them don’t last long,” said a Ukrainian soldier in the Kharkiv region, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

🇧🇷⚖️👁▶️URGENT: Chris Pavlovski, owner of the video platform Rumble, announces that he will shut down services in Brazil due to the censorship imposed by Supreme Federal Court (STF) ministers; see the complete statement below:

I will not be bullied by foreign government demands to censor Rumble creators. My statement on turning off Brazil.

Recently, the Brazilian courts demanded that we remove certain creators from Rumble. As part of our mission to restore a free and open internet, we have committed not to move the goalposts on our content policies. Users with unpopular views are free to access our platform on the same terms as our millions of other users. Accordingly, we have decided to disable access to Rumble for users in Brazil while we challenge the legality of the Brazilian courts' demands.

We are disappointed by the court decisions that have caused the Brazilian people to lose the ability to view a wide range of Rumble content. This action will not have a material effect on our business, but we hope the Brazilian courts reconsider their decisions so we can restore service soon.

🇨🇳🇦🇷 — China has suspended a US$6.5 billion currency swap agreement with Argentina, and the freeze remains in effect until President Javier Milei demonstrates a clear intention to engage with Beijing, Argentine media have reported

⚠️ News of the move comes just 10 days into the tenure of the new president, who campaigned on breaking ties with China, and underscores the challenge Milei will face in trying to follow through with those pledges. Asked to comment, Zhicheng Xie, the spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Argentina, declined to confirm the reports.

‼️ In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin also refused to confirm or deny the reports, only saying that China remained committed “to cooperation with Argentina on the basis of equality and mutual benefit”.

➡️ The funding is part of a deal renewed annually since 2009, crucial for Buenos Aires due to its negative holdings of international dollar reserves. Argentina has relied on such swaps as one of its few credit options, given the South American nation’s reputation for defaulting on international debt.

📢 🇮🇷 🇲🇦 Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claim they can shut down the Strait of Gibraltar, which links the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea.

🔶️ “They shall soon await the closure of the Mediterranean Sea, (the Strait of) Gibraltar and other waterways,” Tasnim quoted Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Naqdi, coordinating commander of the Guards, as saying.

🔶️ Iran has no direct access to the Mediterranean itself and it was not clear how the Guards could attempt to close it off, although Naqdi talked of “the birth of new powers of resistance and the closure of other waterways.”

🔶️ “Yesterday, the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz became a nightmare for them, and today they are trapped … in the Red Sea,” Naqdi was quoted as saying.
