Julian Assange has been granted limited leave to appeal by the High Court.
I have just been given the ruling and will provide more information below
Before I include more points of order (the ruling is around 66 pages) this means that Assange has not exhausted his legal options in the United Kingdom, and may yet convince a court to stay and bar the extradition to the United States
The judges have said that they agree with the below points. (Once again, this is not the full appeal decision. They are only saying: we think you have a good case. Go argue to the full appeals court).
They say that Assange's case is strong and that the decision of the judge to send the extradition to the Sec of State (Foreign Secretary) was wrong because:
a) "if extradited, the applicant might be prejudiced at his trial by reason of his nationality (contrary to section 81(b) of the 2003 Act)
b) as a consequence of a), but only as a consequence of a), extradition is incompatible with article 10 of the Convention."
They also say, in addition to the judge sending it to the Foreign Sec for approval being wrong, that it was also wrong for the Foreign Sec to sign it.
"The applicant has established an arguable case that the Secretary of State’s decision was wrong because extradition is barred by inadequate specialty/death penalty protection."
The High Court agreed the assurances are weak and ruled that unless the US provide stronger protections, they will allow Assange to appeal on these grounds: violation of freedom of expression, prejudiced at trial because of nationality, insufficient death penalty protections.
I previously exposed US assurances as being a giant hoax and published classified US documents on Mendoza. His case was cited by Assange's lawyers.
He was not only given assurances, but a legally binding contract, which the US violated anyway:
The United States have until April 16 to file any new assurances.
If no assurances are filed, Assange has permission to appeal on those grounds as well.
If assurances are filed, Assange has until April 30 to respond, and Foreign Sec/US to respond to his submissions by 14 May.
The judges denied appeal of the following points
-That the extradition was incompatible with the treaty
-That his extradition is barred by the Extradition Act because it is for the purpose of a prosecution for a political opinion
-That the extradition violates Art 7 (No punishment without law) of the European Convention on Human Rights
-That his right to a fair trial under Art 6 of the Convention is violated
-That the extradition is incompatible with Art 2 (Right to life) and 3 (Prohibition of Torture) of the Convention

US must provide explicit assurances that Assange 1) can raise a 1st Am defense, 2) will have the same rights as US citizens and 3) will never face the death penalty.
Deadline is April 16.

Additional contract awards are expected soon for delivery next year.
Meanwhile, another Turkish firm, Repkon, will begin production of 155mm shell bodies this June at General Dynamics Ordinance and Tactical Systems' new plant in Mesquite, TX. This new GD-OTS plant will eventually produce 30% of all US shell bodies.
Finally, the US is in discussion with Turkey to ramp up their purchases of Turkish made TNT for use as explosive filler in US made shells.

🇨🇱🔨Chile opens lithium salt flats for investment, saves two for state control
Chile's government on Tuesday opened up more than two dozen lithium salt flats to private investment, while reserving the prolific Atacama and Maricunga deposits for state majority control in lithium extraction.
The opening to fresh projects could more than double Chile's production of lithium, a key material for electric vehicle batteries, in a decade, said Finance Minister Mario Marcel.
🔻Officials said they would open a tender process in 26 salt flats in April, set to conclude in July, although not all would necessarily attract interest, officials said. In another five salt flats, state-run companies are already beginning projects and seeking partners.
Only two companies currently extract lithium in Chile - Chile's SQM and U.S.-based Albemarle - both in the Atacama salt flat.
