A U.S. Navy briefing slide is calling new attention to the worrisome disparity between Chinese and U.S. capacity to build new naval vessels and total naval force sizes.
"Submarines are crucial for navies because they provide stealthy, strategic capabilities for surveillance, deterrence, and offensive operations in underwater environments.
This graphic, via Visual Capitalist's Bruno Venditti, shows the top 12 countries by their number of military submarines as of July 2024, based on data from GlobalFirepower.com.
Russia ranks first with 65 submarines, followed by the U.S. (64) and China (61).
Combined, the three countries account for 40% of the global fleet.
(...)
The latest addition to the U.S. Navy, the Columbia-class nuclear submarine, is the most sophisticated vessel of its kind. It is stealthy and equipped with 16 missile tubes."

"For the benefits of space development to be shared by all, it is essential that they are fostered within a solid framework of public policies. The fantasies of billionaires who prefer to colonize Mars rather than take care of Earth do not replace the action and guidance of the State.
When it comes to technology, the common practice in the developing world is to race to the top and, as the South Korean economist says, kick the ladder away so that others cannot reach it. Cooperation between countries of the Global South has the potential to reverse this disadvantage. Together we can multiply our ability to build our own ladder."

🇪🇺 Threats to the EU refining industry
BP predicts the sunset of European refining: "Oil refineries across Europe will be forced to shut as the West abandons fossil fuels in the race to net zero," – said BP CEO Murray Okincloss, commenting on the company's financial statements.
He believes that older and smaller refineries in the EU will close or switch to biofuels as conventional oil refining becomes unprofitable due to a combination of soaring fuel taxes and falling demand from drivers switching to electric cars.
This is not entirely correct, as the main consumer of fuel is industry and freight transportation. Now, both industrial production and transportation are declining in the EU, leading to lower fuel consumption.
Data from thw Fuels Europe shows that refining capacity in the EU, as well as in the UK, Switzerland and Norway, is already declining. Capacity has fallen from 781 million tons a year in 2009 to 677 million tons now. This means that Europe accounts for about 15% of the world's refining capacity - well behind the US with 21% or APAC with 36%.
According to Oilprice, BP is scaling back biofuels projects, contrary to its own forecast, in response to high oil demand. The company has tempered its enthusiasm for its low-carbon program, and with it cut its climate commitments, adapting to an operating model that assumes continued high oil demand into the 2040s and beyond. In June, BP decided to continue investing in deepwater fields in the Gulf of Mexico, and made a statement saying it was "scaling back" new biofuels projects. All the "net zero" rhetoric is only needed to increase market share for conventional energy.
The oil giant's net profit for the second quarter of this year was higher than expected ($2.76 billion). The company's low-carbon and natural gas division, on the other hand, performed poorly, posting a loss of $0.1 billion.
These facts are in favor of refining over biofuels.

"The Argentine Republic, as previously stated in the official communiqué issued on August 2, unequivocally concludes that the undisputed winner of the presidential election held in Venezuela on July 28 is Edmundo González Urrutia. The Venezuelan people overwhelmingly supported his candidacy, and the popular will must be respected.
Furthermore, the Argentine Republic condemns the filing of criminal charges against the winning presidential candidate and the main opposition leader, as well as the arbitrary detention of key figures from opposition political parties, journalists, and media workers.
The Argentine Republic reiterates its call on the Venezuelan authorities to respect their obligations under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations regarding the immunity and inviolability of official premises. In this regard, it reminds that the Argentine official residence in Caracas has been without electricity for more than a week and once again requests its prompt restoration."
