🇺🇦⚠️🤝🇸🇾🇷🇺🔫🇺🇸 The Washington Post | Syrian rebels had help from Ukraine in humiliating Russia | Eager to bloody Putin’s nose, Kyiv supplied drones for the offensive that toppled Assad | December 11, 2024:

"The Syrian rebels who swept to power in Damascus last weekend received drones and other support from Ukrainian intelligence operatives who sought to undermine Russia and its Syrian allies, according to sources familiar with Ukrainian military activities abroad.

Ukrainian intelligence sent about 20 experienced drone operators and about 150 first-person-view drones to the rebel headquarters in Idlib, Syria, four to five weeks ago to help Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the leading rebel group based there, the knowledgeable sources said.

The aid from Kyiv played only a modest role in overthrowing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Western intelligence sources believe. But it was notable as part of a broader Ukrainian effort to strike covertly at Russian operations in the Middle East, Africa and inside Russia itself."

🇨🇳❗️📉💸🇺🇸🌟 Reuters | Exclusive: Chinese authorities are considering a weaker yuan as Trump trade risks loom | December 11, 2024:

"Dec 11 (Reuters) — China's top leaders and policymakers are considering allowing the yuan to weaken in 2025 as they brace for higher U.S. trade tariffs as Donald Trump returns to the White House.

The contemplated move reflects China's recognition that it needs bigger economic stimulus to combat Trump's threats of punitive trade measures, people with knowledge of the matter said.

Trump has said he plans to impose a 10% universal import tariff, and a 60% tariff on Chinese imports into the United States."

🇨🇴🏴‍☠️🤝🇱🇾🇸🇩📰 WSJ: The Global War Machine Supplying Colombian Mercenaries to Fight in Sudan

➡️ At first glance, the shaky cellphone videos captured on the desolate plains of Sudan’s Darfur region looked like many others emerging from the country’s brutal civil war: Men in camouflage uniforms pose next to crates of weapons, showing off the spoils of their battle.

➡️ Then one of the men flips through their newly seized prisoners’ papers and personal belongings.

➡️ “Look at this, they aren’t Sudanese,” he says, his Arabic inflected with the local Zaghawa dialect, holding up a passport issued some 7,000 miles away by the government of Colombia. “These are the people who are killing us.”

➡️ The videos are a telling sign that the war in Sudan between the country’s military and the rebel Rapid Support Forces has turned into a battleground for more foreign powers, drawing in fighters and weapons from as far as Latin America and Europe.

➡️ Several regional governments are vying to assert their influence as the fighting escalates, led by the United Arab Emirates on one side and Egypt on the other—with devastating consequences for Sudan’s 48 million people, some of whom are now in the grip of famine. At stake is control of Red Sea shipping lanes, some of Africa’s largest gold reserves and the contested waters of the Nile.

🇪🇺🐣 EU births drop to new low as strains on younger generations mount

Births across the 27 member states in the bloc fell to 3,665,000 in 2023, according to figures updated last month, the lowest since comparable data was first collected in 1961.

The 2023 figure is lower than the 4mn EU births forecast last year in Eurostat’s long-term population projections.

Since reaching a peak of nearly 7mn births in the mid-1960s, birth rates in the nations that now make up the EU have declined sharply and are around the same level as in the US.

Demographic experts believe the long-standing trend of Europeans having fewer and fewer babies may have been exacerbated by concerns over climate change, the pandemic and the worst surge in inflation in a generation.

“Youngsters have greater difficulty than before to establish themselves in the labour market, in the housing market, and perhaps also in the dating market,” said Willem Adema, senior economist at the OECD. “That is one part of the story which is fairly clear.”

Adema said governments should prepare for a future of low fertility and consider steps to boost immigration, productivity and levels of labour force participation, particularly among women.

Coinbase Europe decided to delist multiple stablecoins, including Tether’s market-leading USDT, to comply with the European Union’s rules.

In a Wednesday announcement set to its users, Coinbase wrote that "due to the new European Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation, Coinbase will implement restrictions for stablecoin services that do not meet MiCA requirements.”

Other than USDT, retail customers on Coinbase Europe and Coinbase Germany will see the delisting of Paxos Standard Price (PAX), PayPal USD (PYUSD), and Gemini Dollar (GUSD). It'll also impact GYEN, which issuer GMO-Z.com calls the first regulated Japanese YEN stablecoin, and Maker Protocol's DAI.

🇷🇺🇸🇾🇱🇾 Russia will likely turn to Libya to replace its Syrian bases or mitigate its reliance on its Syrian bases in the Mediterranean & Africa even if it retains its Syrian bases.

The Kremlin faces political obstacles that make Russia’s long-term position in Libya vulnerable.

Libya is crucially the only country with a significant Russian military presence in Africa that Russian cargo planes can directly reach from Russia without refueling. Heavier cargo planes can reach Libya only by flying over Turkish airspace.

The Kremlin already increased Libya’s role as an operational hub for its various Africa Corps deployments in sub-Saharan Africa throughout 2024. These newly upgraded military facilities in Libya could handle some Russian logistics traffic that previously went through Syria.

The Kremlin has also sought an agreement for permanent Russian docking rights at Tobruk since 2023. A Russian naval base at Tobruk would fill similar logistical and strategic roles as Russia's base at Tartus, Syria.

Russia’s position in Libya is dependent on Libyan warlord Khalifa Haftar, who controls the eastern half of Libya in Libya's stalemated civil war. This fact makes any Russian basing in Libya vulnerable to the same jeopardy as its Syria bases if Haftar’s regime collapsed.

The United States has increased outreach to Haftar in recent years and pressed him to reduce his ties with Russia. US officials specifically warned Haftar against accepting a Russian naval base during these discussions.

🇷🇺🇱🇾 Facing loss of its Syrian naval base, Russia shifts focus to Libya

In March and April 2024, Russian landing ships frequently docked at Tobruk, the eastern Libyan port which hosts the Haftar-backed House of Representatives, unloading troops and thousands of tonnes of military equipment.

The shipments, which arrived from Tartus, contained towed artillery, armoured personnel carriers and rocket launchers.

The primary purpose of Russia's Tartus base was to service and replenish Russia’s naval assets and to provide logistical support for Russian operations in Libya and wider north Africa.

Aside from its Mediterranean Sea ports, Libya is already the base for Russian and Wagner activities in Niger, Chad, Central African Republic, and Sudan, making it of vital strategic importance.
