Births across the 27 member states in the bloc fell to 3,665,000 in 2023, according to figures updated last month, the lowest since comparable data was first collected in 1961.
The 2023 figure is lower than the 4mn EU births forecast last year in Eurostat’s long-term population projections.
Since reaching a peak of nearly 7mn births in the mid-1960s, birth rates in the nations that now make up the EU have declined sharply and are around the same level as in the US.
Demographic experts believe the long-standing trend of Europeans having fewer and fewer babies may have been exacerbated by concerns over climate change, the pandemic and the worst surge in inflation in a generation.
“Youngsters have greater difficulty than before to establish themselves in the labour market, in the housing market, and perhaps also in the dating market,” said Willem Adema, senior economist at the OECD. “That is one part of the story which is fairly clear.”
Adema said governments should prepare for a future of low fertility and consider steps to boost immigration, productivity and levels of labour force participation, particularly among women.

Coinbase Europe decided to delist multiple stablecoins, including Tether’s market-leading USDT, to comply with the European Union’s rules.
In a Wednesday announcement set to its users, Coinbase wrote that "due to the new European Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation, Coinbase will implement restrictions for stablecoin services that do not meet MiCA requirements.”
Other than USDT, retail customers on Coinbase Europe and Coinbase Germany will see the delisting of Paxos Standard Price (PAX), PayPal USD (PYUSD), and Gemini Dollar (GUSD). It'll also impact GYEN, which issuer GMO-Z.com calls the first regulated Japanese YEN stablecoin, and Maker Protocol's DAI.

The Kremlin faces political obstacles that make Russia’s long-term position in Libya vulnerable.
Libya is crucially the only country with a significant Russian military presence in Africa that Russian cargo planes can directly reach from Russia without refueling. Heavier cargo planes can reach Libya only by flying over Turkish airspace.
The Kremlin already increased Libya’s role as an operational hub for its various Africa Corps deployments in sub-Saharan Africa throughout 2024. These newly upgraded military facilities in Libya could handle some Russian logistics traffic that previously went through Syria.
The Kremlin has also sought an agreement for permanent Russian docking rights at Tobruk since 2023. A Russian naval base at Tobruk would fill similar logistical and strategic roles as Russia's base at Tartus, Syria.
Russia’s position in Libya is dependent on Libyan warlord Khalifa Haftar, who controls the eastern half of Libya in Libya's stalemated civil war. This fact makes any Russian basing in Libya vulnerable to the same jeopardy as its Syria bases if Haftar’s regime collapsed.
The United States has increased outreach to Haftar in recent years and pressed him to reduce his ties with Russia. US officials specifically warned Haftar against accepting a Russian naval base during these discussions.

In March and April 2024, Russian landing ships frequently docked at Tobruk, the eastern Libyan port which hosts the Haftar-backed House of Representatives, unloading troops and thousands of tonnes of military equipment.
The shipments, which arrived from Tartus, contained towed artillery, armoured personnel carriers and rocket launchers.
The primary purpose of Russia's Tartus base was to service and replenish Russia’s naval assets and to provide logistical support for Russian operations in Libya and wider north Africa.
Aside from its Mediterranean Sea ports, Libya is already the base for Russian and Wagner activities in Niger, Chad, Central African Republic, and Sudan, making it of vital strategic importance.

🇵🇾🇮🇱 Paraguay opens Israel embassy in Jerusalem after moving it from Tel Aviv
Paraguay formally opened its new Jerusalem embassy in Israel on Thursday in a ceremony attended by President Santiago Peña and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, following a back-and-forth struggle over the diplomatic seat that kicked off in 2018.
The South American nation's embassy had for decades been located in the coastal Israeli city of Tel Aviv, but in 2018 former President Horacio Cartes ordered its move to Jerusalem. Months later, the facility was moved back to Tel Aviv after an abrupt reversal announced by Cartes' successor, Mario Abdo.
Peña took office last year and shortly afterwards announced the embassy's move back to Jerusalem. He traveled to Israel to officially open it on Thursday.

ORLANDO, Florida—Earlier this year, officials at US Space Command released a list of priorities and needs, and among the routine recitation of things like cyber defense, communications, and surveillance was a relatively new term: "integrated space fires."
This is a new phrase in the esoteric terminology the military uses to describe its activities. Essentially, "fires" are offensive or defensive actions against an adversary. The Army defines fires as "the use of weapon systems to create specific lethal and nonlethal effects on a target."
The inclusion of this term in a Space Command planning document was another signal that Pentagon leaders, long hesitant to even mention the possibility of putting offensive weapons in space for fear of stirring up a cosmic arms race, see the taboo of talking about space warfare as a thing of the past.
