The ‘Panama Strategy’ Goes Global

In the larger picture, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) through its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has deepened its presence and influence in Latin America, as it has in many strategic areas around the globe. The BRI, also known as “One Belt, One Road,” is a global infrastructure and investment scheme to insert Chinese money, influence, and personnel into nations worldwide by building needed infrastructure such as roads, railways, ports, and energy pipelines.

BRI participation typically weakens foreign governments by leaving them deep in debt to Beijing, resulting to some degree in a loss of sovereignty or control over Chinese-built ports and other infrastructure."

"Russia is gearing up to respond to President Donald Trump’s call to accept a ceasefire after Ukraine agreed to a 30-day truce at talks with the US in Saudi Arabia.

The head of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, Sergei Naryshkin, and US Central Intelligence Agency Director John Ratcliffe agreed to maintain regular contacts during a phone call on Tuesday to discuss cooperation between their agencies, the Interfax news service reported on Wednesday.

Trump said US officials would talk with Russian counterparts on Wednesday and that it’s possible he could speak to Russian President Vladimir Putin as soon as this week. US envoy Steve Witkoff is due to travel to Moscow to meet with Putin this week, Bloomberg News earlier reported."

"Russia is seeking to clamp down on Western spying on its soil, amid ongoing tit-for-tat diplomatic expulsions especially involving Britain, related to alleged espionage. The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) confirmed Monday that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs revoked the accreditation of two British diplomats, accusing them of entering Russia based on false information. They are being booted from the country.

The counterintelligence agency described it had "identified signs of intelligence and subversive work" that the pair had carried out against Russian national security interests. Countries often issue diplomatic cover for intelligence operatives working out of their foreign embassies.

The UK Foreign Office was adamant in rejecting the basis of the accusations: "This is not the first time that Russia has made malicious and baseless accusations against our staff," it said. But this didn't seem so 'direct' a denial speaking to whether the two were spies or not."
