President Donald Trump said he would impose a 25 percent tariff on any country that buys oil or gas from Venezuela.
"President Donald Trump is imposing a 25% 'Secondary' tariff on Venezuela, and a 25% tariff on "any Country that purchases Oil and/or Gas from Venezuela," payable to the United States "on any Trade they do with our Country."
The tariffs, which would go into affect April 2 should Trump implement them, would cut a major source of revenue for the Maduro government - while ratcheting up pressure on China, a major purchaser of Venezuelan crude that's already looking at 20% tariffs under Trump.
Trump cited "the fact that Venezuela has purposefully and deceitfully sent to the United States, undercover, tens of thousands of high level, and other, criminals, many of whom are murderers and people of a very violent nature," in his 25% tariff on Venezuela, and says the additional 25% tariff punishing anyone buying oil or gas will begin on April 2nd."

📝🤨 Various online commentators question whether the messages were leaked intentionally:
🔺 Josiah Lippincott: Normally IDF-veteran Jeffrey Goldberg would have to wait at least 2 or 3 hours for Mossad to give him the hacked communications.
By adding him straight to the gc, the admin simply cut out the middleman.
🔺 Paul Skallas: Looks like an intentional leak to me. They are even messaging to each other like there will be a large audience reading this.
🔺 Cynical Publius: The minute I read the chat my very first thought was that Goldberg was specifically and deliberately included so that he would leak what he saw to the public. The idea was to let Europe know just how unhappy American leadership is with Europe's unwillingness to pull its weight militarily. The backchannel, seemingly accidental nature of that reveal was powerful and I believe intentional.
Also, as someone who has read his fair share of Top Secret/SCI war plans, this ain't it.
🔺 FischerKing: It was Jeffrey Goldberg who tried to link Sadaam Hussein to Al Qaeda (and by implication to 9/11) in a 2002 New Yorker article - part of the overall effort to get us into the Iraq war. Not a guy you want with access to anything confidential.
🔺 ZMT: Goldberg isn’t your average editor-in-chief. He’s ex-IDF and notorious for pushing the Iraq war.

— 🇺🇸/🇮🇷/🇷🇺/🇨🇳/🇰🇵 NEW: U.S. Intelligence has published its 'Annual Threat Assessment' report:
– The report states that 'Iran is not currently building a nuclear weapon, contrary to previous speculations. Iran remains a key focus of U.S. foreign policy due to its influence in the Middle East and strategic alliances. It continues to enhance the lethality and precision of its domestically produced missile and UAV systems, holding the largest stockpiles in the region.'
– 'Iran has deployed small boats and submarines capable of disrupting shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Its large conventional forces can inflict substantial damage on attackers, execute regional strikes, and disrupt energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.'
– 'Iran's expertise in cyber warfare poses significant threats to U.S. networks and allies.'
– Hamas retains most of its underground infrastructure and has thousands of fighters.
– China is labeled as the 'most comprehensive military threat' to the U.S.
– Increased military pressure on Taiwan is expected this year.
– Russia is developing a nuclear-capable satellite, posing 'potential catastrophic consequences.'
– The alignment between China, Russia, and North Korea is described as 'irreversible.'
– Al-Qaeda and ISIS-K remain the most serious 'transnational Islamic extremists.'
*Information available as of March 18, 2025, has been used in the report.
