What is the ruling on offering congratulations on the occasion of the Hijri new year and saying “Kull ‘am wa antum bi khayr” or praying for blessing, or sending a card with best wishes for blessings in the new year?

Shaykh ‘Abd al-Karim al-Khudayr said concerning offering congratulations on the occasion of the hijri new year:

“Praying for another Muslim in general terms, in phrases that are not meant as a kind of ritual on special occasions such as ‘Eid, is acceptable, especially if what is meant by this greeting is friendship and to show a friendly face to one’s fellow Muslim. Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “I do not initiate the greeting but if someone greets me I return the greeting, because responding to the greeting is obligatory. But being the first to offer congratulations is neither Sunnah nor forbidden.”

‘Âshûrâ’ should be fasted as the 9th + 10th or just the 10th:

Shaykh Sulaymân Ibn Nâsir al-‘Alwân stated: “What is confirmed from the Prophet ﷺ is that he fasted ‘Âshûrâ’. And from the time that he came to Al-Madînah, he singled out ‘Âshûrâ’ until Allâh (Azza wa Jall), took his soul. And right before his death he said, and the narration is in Muslim:

لَئِنْ بَقِيتُ إِلَى قَابِلٍ لَأَصُومَنَّ التَّاسِعَ
‘If I remain until next year, I will fast the ninth.’
And he did not remain until the next (year).

And ‘Abdur-Razzâq narrated in “Al-Musannaf” with an authentic chain:
صُومُوا التَّاسِعَ وَالْعَاشِرَ
‘Fast the ninth and the tenth' (And this has an authentic chain)

The best levels of ‘Âshûrâ’ is the ninth and the tenth. Then this is followed by the tenth alone without any Karâhah (dislike).

As for those who have said that the levels of ‘Âshûrâ’ are three; and they mentioned the eleventh, then there is no evidence for that. As the narration narrated in “Al-Musnad”:
صُومُوا يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ وَخَالِفُوا فِيهِ الْيَهُودَ صُومُوا قَبْلَهُ يَوْمًا أَوْ بَعْدَهُ يَوْمًا
'Fast the Day of 'Âshûrâ' and be different than the Jews in it. And fast a day before it or a day after it.' This is a Munkar narration; it was narrated by Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdir-Rahmân Ibn Abî Laylâ alone.

And Shu’bah said about him: ‘I never saw anyone with a worse memory than him.’ And there is nearly an agreement about him being weak. Consequently, the levels of ‘Âshûrá’ are two levels; the ninth and the tenth or the tenth alone.”

“If a man loves his brother (in Islam), let him inform him, that he loves him.“

It is an authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) ḥadīth, narrated by Aḥmad, Abū Dāwūd, At-Tirmidhī and others.

Virtues of fasting Ashurah (10 Muharram)

▫️The expiation of sins that is achieved by fasting ‘Ashoora’ refers to minor sins; with regard to major sins, they need separate repentance.

Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

Fasting the day of ‘Arafaah is an expiation for two years, and the day of ‘Ashoora is an expiation for one year, and if a person’s Ameen coincides with the Ameen of the angels, his previous sins will be forgiven… Each of the things mentioned may bring expiation. If he does something that expiates for minor sins he will be expiated, and if there are no minor or major sins, it will be recorded for him as good deeds and he will rise in status thereby… If there is one or more major sins and no minor sins, we hope that it will reduce his major sins.

—Al-Majmoo’ Sharh al-Muhadhdhab, part 6.

How to Fast Ashura (fasting on 9th & 10th Muharram/ just on 10th Muharram/ 9, 10,11/ 10 & 11? )

What we know from this:

-What is most preferred to is fasting on 9th and 10th

-One can fast on 10th alone and it is NOT makrooh (disliked)

-There is no daleel for fasting on 11th.

-Some scholars say it's mustahab to fast on 11th as well and they say it's to be on safe side due to any possibility of error in calculation of Hijri date. And due to this it's not declared as a bid'ah.
Allah knows best.

Fasting reminder, (i) Tāsū'ā’ (27th July, Thursday) (ii) 'Āshūrā’ (28th July, Friday)
Ibn Qudamah said: “It is makruh to single out the day of Friday for fasting , unless that coincides with a fast which one usually observes, such as a person who fasts alternate days, and a day that he fasts coincides with Friday, or a person who has the habit of fasting on the first or last day of the month, or the middle day of the month.”

(al-Mughni, vol. 3, p. 53)

"The same applies to one who has fasts to make up from Ramadan. “It is permissible for a Muslim to fast on a Friday to make up a day from Ramadan, even if he fasts the Friday on its own.” (Fatwa al-Lajnah al-Daimah, vol. 10, p. 347)

Similarly, if ‘Ashura’ or Arafah coincides with a Friday, he may fast, because his intention is to fast ‘Ashura’ or ‘Arafah, not to fast on a Friday. And Allah is the Source of strength.

And Allah knows best."

If you hear words that grieve you, heavy criticism that stabs at your heart, look beyond and reflect on yourself. If it has any truth in it, then it's a reminder from your Lord who loves to have you Flee to Him, to turn back in repentance—because he WANTS to forgive you. He sends warnings your way, because He wants to save you. That's His Rahmah for you

If you hear words that grieve you, heavy criticism that stabs at your heart, look beyond and reflect on yourself. If it has any truth in it, then it's a reminder from your Lord who loves to have you Flee to Him, to turn back in repentance—because he WANTS…
And there's nothing off limits with a sincere repentance; including the most abhorred and ugliest of sins.

Az-Zumar 39:53-58
(English - Mohsin Khan/Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali)

Say: "O ‘Ibâdî (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allâh: verily, Allâh forgives all sins. Truly He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

And turn in repentance and in obedience with true Faith (Islâmic Monotheism) to your Lord and submit to Him (in Islâm) before the torment comes upon you, (and) then you will not be helped.

And follow the best of that which is sent down to you from your Lord (i.e. this Qur’ân, do what it orders you to do and keep away from what it forbids), before the torment comes on you suddenly while you perceive not!.

Lest a person should say: "Alas, my grief that I was undutiful to Allâh (i.e. I have not done what Allâh has ordered me to do), and I was indeed among those who mocked [at the truth! i.e. Lâ ilâha illallâh (none has the right to be worshipped but Allâh), the Qur’ân, and Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم and at the faithful believers].

Or (lest) he should say: "If only Allâh had guided me, I should indeed have been among the Muttaqûn (the pious - See V.2:2).".

Or (lest) he should say when he sees the torment: "If only I had another chance (to return to the world), then I should indeed be among the Muhsinûn (good-doers - See V.2:112).".

You can be, not just among the al-Muttaqun, but you can level up to Muhsinun! You can be of His Awliya for Whom He wages war. You can be among the foremost. You can achieve His Love. And that's what He wants from you. Isn't that enough to smile through the tears and utter 'Alhamdulillah' gratefully?

Indeed, every anguish that is tearing away your soul, that have you turning to Him is a beautiful blessing; a reminder that it's still not too late to start afresh to earn His Pleasure.

Why would you despair and give up on a Lord who WANTS to accept your Repentance? Yes, read again. Not just capable of accepting, not just The Most Accepting, but actually WISHES to! Subhanallah.

An-Nisa' 4:26-27
(English - Mohsin Khan/Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali)

Allâh wishes to make clear (what is lawful and what is unlawful) to you, and to show you the ways of those before you, and accept your repentance, and Allâh is All-Knower, All-Wise.

Allâh wishes to accept your repentance, but those who follow their lusts, wish that you (believers) should deviate tremendously away (from the Right Path).

Yunus 10:25
(English - Mohsin Khan/Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali)

Allâh calls to the Home of Peace (i.e. Paradise, by accepting Allâh’s religion of Islâmic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds and abstaining from polytheism and evil deeds) and guides whom He wills to the Straight Path.
