NATO chief scraps €100 billion Ukraine fund plan

The proposal fell flat with members of the US-led military bloc, the outlet has said.

In April, several Western media outlets reported, citing diplomatic sources, that Stoltenberg had presented a draft long-term military support plan for Ukraine, designed in part to guard against any cut in US support if former President Donald Trump returns to the White House. Earlier this year, Trump called for restricting aid to Ukraine to loans and insisted that European NATO members match Washington’s level of assistance to Kiev.

The Stoltenberg plan was reportedly been questioned by several NATO members who sought clarification from the bloc’s secretary general on where and how the enormous sum of money involved would be obtained. The unnamed officials told Politico last month that the plan was “confusing” and that the €100 million figure would be revised.

Russia intends to fight for a “new polycentric world,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said at SPIEF.

Speaking at a panel discussion on new norms of international relations at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Zakharova slammed Western governments for resisting the structural changes which have already started with regard to the self-organization of nations and their interactions with other states.

“We are talking about polycentrism, a departure from previous norms, and we see the desperate resistance of the Collective West... They see the norm differently – as their own dominance, as a world order based on one rule – that they must dominate as before, and everyone must do only what the dominant allows them to do,” she stated, adding that the drive for dominance has only ever “led humanity to monstrous tragedies,” including colonialism and Nazism.

Rosneft chief reveals cost EU paid for rejecting Russian gas

Members of the bloc have shelled out $630 billion to replace Moscow’s resources, Igor Sechin has said.

The figure is close to investments made in the bloc into so-called green energy over the same period of time, describing it as quadruple the aggregated gross domestic product of the Baltic states and equal to the total volume of the Swedish and Polish economies.

“The sum also equals the EU’s total gas spending over the previous eight years,” the Rosneft chief highlighted.

Higher energy costs are “eating up” the margins of energy-intensive sectors such as production of steel, fertilizers, chemicals, ceramics, and glass, Sechin claimed, adding that production activity in the euro area has been declining since the middle of 2022.

He stressed that 32% of German enterprises are already planning to transfer their production facilities abroad due to increased energy costs that inevitably deprive them of competitive advantage.

Russia ready to strike NATO airfields hosting Ukrainian jets

The head of Kiev’s air force, Sergey Golubtsov, previously stated that some F-16s donated to his country will be based abroad.

F-16 fighter jets and any airfields they are based at will be legitimate targets for the Russian military if they participate in combat missions against Moscow’s forces, the chairman of the Russian State Duma Defense Committee, Andrey Kartapolov, has warned.

The comments come as Kiev prepares to receive the first delivery of US-made fighter jets from its Western backers, after Ukrainian pilots were trained to fly them.  

In a statement to RIA, Kartapolov clarified that if the F-16s “are not used for their intended purpose” or are simply held in storage at foreign airbases with the intent to transfer them to Ukraine, where they will be equipped, maintained, and flown from Ukrainian airfields, then Russia would have no claims against its “former partners” and would not target them.

BRICS developing platform for transactions in national currencies

Member states are seeking to improve the international monetary and financial system, the Russian foreign minister says.

Speaking at a meeting of the economic bloc’s foreign ministers in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, Lavrov said BRICS was “actively working to implement the decisions of the Johannesburg summit last year, particularly when it comes to improving the international monetary and financial system, developing a platform for settlements in national currencies in mutual trade.”

He added that the bloc, which recently underwent a process of unprecedented expansion, is also looking to harmonize the framework of interaction between BRICS partners.

“Our agenda is extensive. It includes issues that will directly affect the future world order based on fair grounds,” Lavrov said.

Russian instructors to train African military personnel

Vice President of Equatorial Guinea Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue has met with Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov.

The agreement was reached during the meeting between Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov and the African vice president.

“Equatorial Guinea and Russia have signed a military training agreement. This agreement will enable Russian instructors to travel to the country to train soldiers from various corps of the national army,” Obiang said in a message on X (formerly Twitter).

In a statement released on the government website, the vice president mentioned that Yevkurov’s visit to Malabo had elevated relations between the two countries to “a higher level,” particularly in multi-sectoral cooperation with a focus on defense and security.

Russian troops liberate Staromayorskoye community in DPR over past day

Russian troops gained better ground and inflicted casualties on eight Ukrainian army brigades in the Kupyansk area over the past day, the ministry reported.

Russian troops liberated the settlement of Staromayorskoye in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) over the past day in the special military operation in Ukraine, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported on Monday.

"Battlegroup East units kept advancing deep into the enemy’s defenses and liberated the settlement of Staromayorskoye in the Donetsk People’s Republic," the ministry said in a statement.

Staromayorskoye was one of the two villages Ukraine managed to take in the South during their catastrophic offensive.
