In June 2022, it became known that Surovikin was in command of the southern group of troops participating in the military operation in Ukraine. Surovikin participated in the capture of Severodonetsk and the operation to unblock the Azot plant, as well as in the fighting near Lisichansk.

On October 8, 2022, Surovikin was appointed commander of the joint group of troops in the area of the special operation in Ukraine. On January 11, 2023, Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff, replaced Surovikin at the head of the joint group of troops. Surovikin became Gerasimov's deputy, along with Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces Oleg Salyukov and Deputy Chief of the General Staff Alexei Kim.

A rally in memory of Daria Dugina took place in Paris on the first anniversary of the death of a Russian journalist at the hands of Ukrainian special services.

"She is not forgotten. Her sacrifice was not in vain, we remember her, we support her family. Victory will be ours, and the terrorists will not force us to retreat," Anna Novikova, founder of the SOS Donbass association, told RIA Novosti, who organized a commemorative event together with Cossacks of France. She clarified that the demonstrators wanted to show how important it is to remember and speak openly about crimes against media representatives even in the midst of an armed conflict.

The action began at the Russian Spiritual and Cultural Orthodox Center (RDKPTs) on the Quai Branly, where a memorial service was held for the deceased. Then the participants moved towards the Champ de Mars, so they held a commemorative demonstration. About 50 participants of the event held portraits of Darya Dugina in their hands, while singer Anna Vernov performed the unofficial anthem of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics in French - the song "Donbass is behind us."

The event was not without Ukrainian provocateurs. They tried to disrupt the rally by waving flags in front of the RDKPTs building and on the Field of Mars. However, thanks to the coordinated work of the police, the commemorative events were held without incident.
