Ethiopia experienced a significant increase in earthquakes in late 2024, with the US Geological Survey (USGS) recording multiple tremors northeast of Awash and near Addis Ababa. On December 30, the danger escalated with three new earthquakes, including a magnitude 5.1 and three measuring 4.6, felt in several cities, including the capital.

➡️Threat of Fantale Volcano Eruption
The Fantale volcano, a large stratovolcano in the Ethiopian Rift Valley near Lake Awash, poses the greatest threat. Continuous shallow earthquakes, magma nearing the surface, and visible cracks around the volcano suggest an imminent eruption. The tremors could potentially affect surrounding regions, including the Gulf of Aden, Red Sea, and Gulf of Aqaba.

By early 2025, Ethiopia experienced over 30 earthquakes, including three on New Year’s Eve (4.4, 4.5, 4.8 magnitude). These caused significant damage, including cracks in the city of Awash, destruction of homes, and disruption of traffic in Oromia and Amhara. Evacuations have been underway in affected areas.

On January 4, Fantale began showing signs of a full eruption, with increased volcanic gas emissions and worsening ground cracks. The Ethiopian government issued warnings and initiated evacuations, including in Abomesa, after a 5.8-magnitude earthquake. Approximately 80,000 residents near the epicenter are being relocated, with no reported casualties.

The Renaissance Dam, located 560 km from the Great African Rift Valley, remains a topic of concern. Experts note that while the seismic activity is concentrated far from the dam, its potential impact cannot be ruled out due to the region’s active geological faults.
