⚡️🇷🇺🇸🇾 Russia will reduce its military presence in Syria but keep its bases?

German Foreign Minister Anna Baerbock called on Friday for Russia to withdraw militarily from Syria.

It is time for Russia to leave its military bases in Syria. The Syrian people will not forget the large-scale bombardments and human rights violations. It was (Russian President Vladimir) Putin who stood by Assad for so long, who supported and covered for the crimes of the regime.

Russia did support the Syrian army, people and their president and heavily bombed groups, including ISIS and HTS. The future of the Russian military presence in the country is unclear after the fall of Assad.

Baerbock’s call for Russia to withdraw from Syria is in line with many Europeans’ desires to see diminished Russian influence in the Middle East, according to Julien Barnes-Dacey, the Middle East and North Africa program director at the European Council on Foreign Relations.

“A lot of Europeans view their wider neighborhood through the lens of the threat posed by Moscow and see the transformation in Syria as an opportunity to push Russia out of the Levant,” he said.

❗️Barnes-Dacey cautioned European leaders to not issue ultimatums to Syria with regard to the Russian presence. According to him, tying European support to kicking out Russia could backfire, as Moscow’s terms for engagement with the new Syrian administration will likely include fewer stipulations on governance.

“Europe may ultimately effectively exclude itself from the conversation by that kind of approach if Moscow is able to come in and offer terms of engagement to Damascus that are far less tied to conditionality in terms of the political framework and inclusivity of the state,” he said.

It is obvious that the new Syrian leadership must independently decide on the issue of future co-operation with Russia without pressure and ultimatums from the West. Especially de facto leader Ahmad al-Sharaa stated in an interview that he does not intend to completely break off relations with Russia, Damascus has ‘strategic interests’ with Moscow. In addition, Russia is the second most powerful country in the world and is of great importance.

Moscow has something to offer Damascus in return for keeping the military bases in Hmeimim and Tartus. This could be not only humanitarian aid and grain, but also supplies of energy and oil products, as well as the fight against international terrorism in the region.
