⚡️🇧🇩✊Bangladesh has been engulfed by mass student protests demanding a reduction in the high quotas set for public service jobs.

🔥👨‍🎓The protests, which have drawn tens of thousands out on the streets, began late last month but tensions escalated on Monday when student activists at Dhaka University, the country’s largest, clashed with police and counter-protesters backed by the ruling Awami League.

💥‼️At least 2700 people were injured in the aftermath (39 killed). The protests erupted in the wake of a June 5 ruling by the Bangladesh High Court reinstating the 30% quota for freedom fighters and their descendants in government jobs, which was repealed in 2018 after a massive agitation led by students and teachers. Government jobs, in Bangladesh, are highly coveted as a stable and lucrative source of income.

🎓According to different sources, nearly 400,000 graduates compete every year for around 3,000 such jobs. A total of 56% of government jobs are reserved for various sections of society in Bangladesh.

💼🕯Of this total, second- and third-generation descendants of those who fought in the 1971 war of independence get 30% of civil service jobs. Women and people from underdeveloped districts get 10% each of seats, indigenous communities are allocated 5% reserves and differently abled 1%.

🔴📣Protestors have this time demanded the removal of discriminatory quotas from all grades, to limit the overall reservation to 5 per cent for backward populations as identified in the constitution, and to pass a bill in parliament to secure this change.
