- NEWS - The Iraqi Turkmen took the initiative to recognize the Turkmen language as an official language. Aydin Maruf, a member of the Executive Committee of the Iraqi Turkmen (Turkomans) Front, announced this at a press conference in Erbil.

The Iraqi Turkmen (Turkomans) Front is a political movement founded in 1995 that represents the Turkmen in Iraq. After the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003, the front denied control of Kirkuk, claiming that the city belonged to the Turkmen.
Iraqi Turkmen are a Turkic people living in northeastern and central Iraq. They descend from Oghuz tribes who settled in the region since the 11th century and are considered the heirs of the Kara-Koyunlu and Ak-Koyunlu confederations. The Turkmen are the third largest people in #Iraq after the Arabs and Kurds.
