Good speculative fiction is rare. Rarer still is good speculative fiction that engages with the techbro shit without giving into it

Let's do a mini-Mother's Day thread: When Charles Schulz got drafted in WWII, his mother was dying of cancer. He never saw her again. Mother's Day in Peanuts is often a sad occasion, none more so than this autobiographical strip.

the capped research here is from 1920. Also notice how this was already observed in frogs.
edit: it wasn’t 1799, it was 1920.

Endocrine disruption, environmental justice, and the ivory tower | Tyrone Hayes | TEDxBerkeley
Dr. Tyrone Hayes discusses his journey as a scientist: initially just a “young boy who really liked frogs,” he would go on to earn worldwide fame for his work on the harmful effects of the pesticide atrazine. Arguing that “those who have the privilege to…

螺旋歯車を4つ並べたらどうなるのかやってみました
もっとたくさん並べたらどうなるでしょうか
I tried to see what would happen if I lined up four spiral type gears.
What would happen if I lined up many more?

Cute little article on passive suicidality. https://theoutline.com/post/7267/living-with-passive-suicidal-ideation #death #health
The former-senior-writer-for-Buzzfeed consults experts in the field to ground her thoughts. Which is alright. But something interesting happens here when she brings up the idea that: maybe the solution is through genuine articulation of these feels, socially, openly.
The (an) expert goes, " . . . Stigma is lower than it’s ever been and suicide rates are as high as they were during the Great Depression . . .".
A few paragraphs later the same expert also goes, ". . . when you’re having that mood all the time, something is happening inside your body. Something’s wrong, and we don’t understand what yet."
Funny, no? Methinks, had the quoted expert — and Borges — situated the pathology across the social body and not inside the body of the individual, they might have found some correlations there. Might even have had a better understanding.
To Borges' credit, she doesn't let go her feelings on the matter that easy. Deflatedly pegging her askance of free interaction on "comfort of social connectedness". No cigar, but close.
