Indian regulator fines Amazon $26.5mn for burying info on $200mn deal

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has ruled that Amazon is guilty of suppressing information on its 2019 investment in Future Retail Group’s subsidiary, and must pay a $26.5mn fine.

The $200mn investment had initially been approved by the CCI, but after Amazon attempted to block a separate deal between Reliance Group - which owns India’s biggest retail chain - and Future Group it was revealed the American Big Tech giant had not disclosed their own affairs fully.

Amazon claim their initial deal included provisions to block any competitors dealing with Future Group, but the CCI argue they hadn’t disclosed this detail initially.
