London Metal Exchange Back Online After Five-Hour Outage

The London Metal Exchange (LME) was supposed to open at 1 a.m. local time but trading only resumed at 6:15 a.m via a backup data center, after a power failure had shut it down.

Traders were reportedly still able to operate on their phones, Bloomberg’s sources say. However, the exchange itself is vital to the market for delivering live price quotes for bellwether commodities like copper and aluminum.

The outage is one of several the LME suffered in the past 5 years, and might put the exchange’s entire existence in question, as recent trade volumes have dropped dramatically from pre-pandemic levels.

Log4j Long-term 'DESTRUCTIVE' Danger - Cyber Officials

The major software flaw could lead to long-term malicious activity, according to a senior US cyber security official. Log4j has allegedly been used by Chinese and Iranian hackers to track network and app activity.

Jen Easterly has called the vulnerability the “most serious in decades” that could be exploited by ransomware gangs and foreign govts for years to come.

It's estimated that hundreds of millions of devices are at risk, and although no foreign government-backed hackers have been confirmed to use it, CISA official Eric Goldstein said “that could all change."

US blood supply “dangerously low” — Red Cross

“The American Red Cross is facing a national blood crisis – its worst blood shortage in over a decade, posing a concerning risk to patient care,” the organization said in a press release Tuesday.

Blood banks across the US have been hit by staffing shortages and drops in donor turnout due to a surge in Covid-19 cases and adverse weather, the American Red Cross warned.

The groups said the ongoing surge in Covid cases and adverse weather are the main reasons behind the drop in donor turnout as blood centers suffer with staffing shortages therefore canceling blood drives.

Republican House candidate demands BAN on Chinese students in Texas

Shelley Luther drew accusations of racism from Democrats for arguing Chinese students should be banned from studying in Texas, insisting “Communists” have no place in US universities.

In a recently deleted tweet, Luther wrote “Chinese students should be BANNED from attending all Texas universities. No more Communists!” Before replacing it with, “Texas Taxpayers should not be subsidizing the next generation of CCP leaders.”

A Chinese media chief accused Luther of being a “notorious Nazi racist,” while Rep. Gene Wu, a Chinese-American Democrat said “[Her] statements are ignorant, hateful, and incite violence against not only Chinese Americans, but all Asian Americans.”

LA times columnist encourages mocking the deaths of those skeptical of vaccines to “create teachable moments”

Michael Hiltzik, a Pulitzer-Prize winning author, penned an article published Monday which said that “mocking” of vaccine skeptics deaths was “ghoulish, yes — but necessary.” (FOX News)

Hiltzik addressed the recent death of Orange County Deputy District Attorney Kelly Ernby who was opposed to vaccine mandates, stating those who “end up in the hospital or the grave can be viewed as receiving their just desserts."

He continued by saying, "Republicans like Ernby used COVID vaccines to turn public health into part of their partisan culture war."

Astronomers witness supergiant star’s death in real-time

Scientists from Northwestern and the University of California were able to track a red supergiant in real-time during its final 130 days, watching the massive star’s rapid self-destruction and death throes before a violent explosion.

It was previously believed red supergiant stars remained calm and didn’t show any symptoms of approaching demise — like eruptions or luminous emissions — ahead of their collapse into a Type II supernova.

The scientists were able to create an animated video of what they witnessed when the star self-destructed and collapsed.

Fans of the Colonel down under will be devastated to learn that staff shortages due to the spread of the Omicron variant have hit Australia’s largest chicken supplier, Ingham’s. (Guardian)

A spokesperson from KFC said the company will shorten its menu as the fast-food chain is “currently experiencing intermittent supply chain disruptions nationally due to Covid-19 related absenteeism at our chicken suppliers.”

Ingham’s also supplies a large portion of the meat market in Australian supermarkets. With some people reporting on Twitter that the country’s store shelves are essentially bare.

Covid half as deadly as typical flu year — experts say

Daily deaths from Coronavirus in the UK are running at less than half the expected mortality rate in a bad flu year, MailOnline analysis has found.

Approximately 130 people are dying in England with Covid every day at what is thought to be the peak of the Omicron wave, compared to 1,300 last January.

Comparatively, there were more than 400 influenza deaths during the last bad flu season in 2017-18 and nearly 300 per day the year before those.

Is it time to just live with the virus?

EU to Hold Large-Scale Cyber Attack 'Supply Chain' Drill

The European Union will reportedly stage a far-reaching cyber security exercise intended to prepare for an attack on its distribution networks. (Bloomberg report)

Originally proposed by France, the drill is intended as a “stress test” to largely simulate a supply chain breach across Europe. The bloc will then coordinate diplomatic and public responses to the mock attacks, as well as to “spillover socio-economic effects in other member states.”

The hacks will be modeled on past cyber attacks, or those thought to be likely in the future, in order to be “as realistic as possible,” according to a document cited in the report.

The exercise is supposed start sometime in the coming days and will continue for six weeks.
