🌻LITTLE DID WE KNOW ABOUT COSMOPOLITAN...🌻

Hi, my friends

Today, I'm here for telling you about Cosmo history and sharing with you the latest October-November issue 🫴
( the pdf will be attached below)

The year was 1886 ❗️, a time when corsets were cinched, and society was more buttoned-up than a Victorian waistcoat. Enter Cosmopolitan Magazine, not just a publication but a brazen disruptor of the status quo. Born in the era of petticoats and parlor conversations, Cosmo was the breath of fresh air that society didn’t know it needed.

Originally founded as The Cosmopolitan in March 1886 by Schlicht & Field of New York, Cosmopolitan started out as a family and women’s magazine. Paul Schlicht described his journal as a “first-class family magazine” within the front cover to readers of his debut issue. Regretfully, Schlicht and Field had to sell the magazine after filing for bankruptcy after two years. John Brisben Walker purchased the journal in 1889, and was later purchased by William Randolph Hearst in 1905 and the magazine was directed towards politics, but later included short stories and poems.  Helen Gurley Brown became chief editor of Cosmopolitan magazine in 1965. This woman made the decision to capitalize on the modern movement and present a hitherto unexplored aspect of sex to the public. This led to an unprecedented growth which  turned Cosmopolitan into the best-selling women’s magazine worldwide.

This isn’t just a magazine; it’s the lifestyle manual for the bold, the fierce, and those who believe that life should be lived at full throttle.
If you’ve ever wondered about love, career, fashion, or the complexities of the modern human experience while simultaneously contemplating the perfect lipstick shade for world domination, then congratulations – you’re Cosmo material.

So,that's what you might not have known about Cosmopolitan Magazine, which is sold by more than 3 000 000 copies only in the USA ❗️

Ive read the issue from cover to cover and here are my picks :

1️⃣Representation isn't a trend - it's a necessity

2️⃣Could you go phone sober ?

3️⃣Love. AI dating advice

There are definitely more articles to pick and choose ,I also found reading Cosmo very useful language-wise , a gateway into modern English .

Have a calm autumn week without too much stress if it is possible ❤️

ICELANDIC LITERATURE and the Day of European Languages at Adelante School turned a lucky day for me !
I express my gratitude to lecturers and all people who made the festival happen 🧡

Hello, my dear friends 🧡

This end-of-September post won't be short because I've got a huge bunch of things to share with you ( sharing is caring ! :))

What do you know about Iceland 🇮🇸? Icelandic writers ?

To both questions I confess that almost nothing from my end ...yes ... nothing...shame on me. But it's never too late, rather, everything happens when it must happen .

Well, the most of my knowledge finishes with SAGAS and then a blank space))

The Sagas are perhaps the best known of all Icelandic literature and are still an intricate part of Iceland's culture and identity. The Sagas are a large body of medieval literature depicting the life of Icelandic settlers in the 9th, 10th and early 11th century
Written in a realistic style with a hint of fantasy, the Sagas are filled with epic battles and larger-than-life heroes where the main themes are honour, glory and revenge.

To be sincere, after having listened to two lectures about Iceland, my curiosity arose and I left the room with a book by Sjorn , a modern Icelandic writer. The book is already waiting for me to be taken off the shelf and start my journey. I love these expectations before I open the first page, before I dive into a new ocean of fantasies, ideas, images .

Short fact file :

1️⃣5️⃣ writers from Iceland , the two of whom write for teenagers:

The books are all translated into Russian and are available in bookshops. I'll attach the photos of the books by other Icelandic writers in the comments so as you could pick and choose from if needed

Do you have any favourite Scandinavian writers?

If you share, you contribute in our reading community

❗️The book by Sjorn is promised to be " magic" , at least it is written on the cover )) Hope the cover isn't misleading this time

Keep in touch ,
Love,
Yulia ❤️

10 segni che sei una persona cafona 🤌

PAGARE ALLA ROMANA

I MODI FANNO L'UOMO

Buona settimana a voi,
A presto ! 🫰

✔️ GASTROPHYSICS ✔️

Hello, my dear friends !

The book I'm writing about today is quintessentially multi-dimensional. Charles Spencer is a new name for me.
The noscript itself stopped me and made me open the first pages - the power of noscripts ...😄yes!! And cooking food runs in my family

Then, The Guardian says the following:

In fact, while Gastrophysics is about cracking the conundrum of the perfect meal, it has almost nothing to do with the nuts and bolts of cuisine. Instead, this is the science of the “everything else”, a blending of gastronomy and psychophysics to probe the myriad, seemingly peripheral, ingredients that influence our perception of flavour, steer our culinary choices and make all the difference between a memorable meal and one to be forgotten....

❗️360 pages and 13 chapters

The book will describe research on how we react to the food we see, hear, smell, touch, and put in our mouths.

We eat with our eyes, ears, nose, memory, imagination and our gut.

Soooo true!!!!

As I'm in the middle of reading it, I take it as a conversation between me and Charles Spencer as if Im in his laboratory, and the longer Im staying there, the better do I understand that ultimately our relationship with food is all about
✔️Emotion
✔️Feeling

Language level: B2 - C1

I'll attach the pdf in the comments for you

Have a " delicious " weekend
With love,
Yulia ❤️

🌻When Olivia Laing moved to New York City in her mid-thirties,she found herself inhabiting loneliness on a daily basis . Increasingly fascinated by this most shameful of experiences ,she began to explore the lonely city by way of art ....🌻

For me personally, the book blends research, memoir and biography. The key question which Olivia raises there is " Why don't we talk about loneliness openly?? What's so shameful about it??

The book raises these sophisticated questions about the experience of loneliness, a state that in a crowded city provides an " uneasy combination of separation and exposure". Olivia focuses on heartbreaking biographies of four artists :
Edward Hopper
Andy Warhol
Henry Darger
David Wojnarowicz

Trippling lightly from sociology to cultural criticism, Olivia Laing explores how each of these characters might help her out of her despair.

There are 8 chapters in the book , 283 pages excluding the Notes section.

Loneliness seems to be such a painful, frightening experience that people do practically everything to avoid it

One more jewel of a statement for you

Chapter 2. Walls of glass
What does it feel like to be lonely? It feels like being hungry: like being hungry when everyone around you is readying for a feast. It feels shameful and alarming, and over time these feelings radiate outwards, making the lonely person increasingly isolated ,increasingly estranged..
Luminously wise and deeply compassionate, confessional and exceptionally beautiful work by Olivia Laing.
Strongly recommend !

Love,
Your Yulia 🌻

No idea how this book was chosen by me in the electronic catalog, neither did I realise that the VOGUE Body and beauty Book would be a true guidance into the world of self-care

Vintage edition : published in 1977 !
Author: Bronwen Meredith ( health and beauty writer )

My impression is the following -
Stern-yet-supportive, rigorous-yet-glamorous, some suggestions are wonderfully amusing, but some are slightly outdated.
In the forward, Meredith reminds us that “the pursuit of beauty is not narcissistic, it is an essential way to build up confidence without which there is little achievement in anything.”

I absolutely fell in love with the sections

❤️On crash diets
❤️On sexuality
❤️On nerves and tension
❤️On Aging
❤️On makeup

A wonderful read for a wonderful woman ❤️,
the woman who celebrates her beauty and spirit !

☝️May be you need a bibliotherapist ??

What does it involve ?
Today, we've discussed the point with one of my students .
I wanted to dive deeper))

Bibliotherapy involves using literature to aid mental and emotional healing.
The term comes from two Greek words: biblion, meaning book, and therapeia or healing. The term was coined in 1914 by American minister and author Samuel Crothers who described bibliotherapy as a “process in which specific literature, both fiction and non-fiction, was prescribed as medicine for a variety of ailments.”

While the term is relatively new, the benefits of bibliotherapy have been recognised for millennia. The ancient Egyptians, for example, had an innoscription above the portal of the library of Pharaoh Ramses II, describing it as “the house of healing for the soul”.

Bibliotherapy was used by medical professionals like Sigmund Freud in the early 20th century. During World War I, as doctors and nurses searched for ways to help soldiers with their mental health, the idea came into its own.

A 2013 article published in the journal Clinical Psychology & Psychotherapy looked at the effectiveness of bibliotherapy in 96 young adults with subthreshold depression. They were randomised into groups having immediate treatment, delayed treatment, placebo and no treatment.

I wish we had this job in Russia 💖
