در این جلسه، دکتر فیروز ادب با نگاهی تاریخی، تحلیلی و تطبیقی به موضوعات معماری و شهرسازی پرداختند. مباحث ارائه‌شده شامل تعریف معماری، نقش محیط و فرهنگ، بررسی معماری ایرانی از دوره‌های مختلف تاریخی، و تحلیل روند توسعه و رکودهای شهری در ونکوور بود.

۱. ماهیت معماری از نگاه دکتر ادب
• معماری ترکیب متعادلی از فرم و فضا است.
• معماری زمانی معنا پیدا می‌کند که کارکرد (عملکرد) و هنر در کنار یکدیگر قرار گیرند.
• نقش معمار، سازمان‌دهی این ترکیب و خلق فضایی هماهنگ، کاربردی و زیباشناسانه است.

۲. تأثیر محیط و فرهنگ بر معماری
• آب‌وهوا، جغرافیا و فرهنگ از عوامل بنیادین در شکل‌گیری معماری هستند.
• معماری بدون توجه به زمینه فرهنگی و شرایط محیطی، فاقد هویت و اصالت خواهد بود.

۳. معماری ایرانی و ساختار گنبدها
• به‌عنوان نمونه، مسجد شیخ لطف‌الله و سایر مساجد ایرانی مطرح شدند.
• گنبدهای ایرانی در واقع پوششی هنری بر یک فضای ساده و چهارگوش هستند.
• این تضاد میان ساختار هندسی ساده و پوشش پیچیده، یکی از ویژگی‌های برجسته معماری ایرانی است.

۴. تجربه میدانی و مطالعه تطبیقی
• دکتر ادب اشاره کردند که سفرهای گسترده ایشان در ایران نقش مهمی در فهم معماری داشته است.

• در دوره صفویان و به‌ویژه زمان شاه‌عباس، معماری ایرانی به اوج کمال خود رسید و کاشیکاری‌ها به بالاترین سطح کیفیت و زیبایی رسیدند.
• آثار سلجوقی و سامانی در سمرقند، بخارا و ماوراءالنهر نمونه‌های برجسته این سیر تکاملی‌اند.
• دکتر ادب معماری سلجوقی را به یک سمفونی موسیقی هماهنگ تشبیه کردند.


۶. چالش‌های توسعه شهری در آمریکای شمالی
• در حوزه معماری و شهرسازی آمریکای شمالی، بوروکراسی اداری بسیار گسترده است.
• فرآیندهای طولانی تصویب طرح‌ها، هماهنگی میان سازمان‌ها و قوانین پیچیده باعث کندی توسعه می‌شود.


۷. رکودها و سکته‌های توسعه در ونکوور

سخنران به چند دوره رکود مهم اشاره کردند:
• ۱۹۸۲ تا ۱۹۸۶
