Rapid Mental Rejuvenation: Experimental Drug Reverses Age-Related Cognitive Decline Within Days
A new study, published on December 1, 2020, showed rapid restoration of youthful cognitive abilities in aged mice, accompanied by a rejuvenation of brain and immune cells that could help explain improvements in brain function.
The data suggest that the aged brain has not permanently lost essential cognitive capacities, as was commonly assumed, but rather that these cognitive resources are still there but have been somehow blocked, trapped by a vicious cycle of cellular stress.
“This study with ISRIB demonstrates a way to break that cycle and restore cognitive abilities that had become walled off over time.”
The drug, called ISRIB, has already been shown in laboratory studies to restore memory function months after traumatic brain injury (TBI), reverse cognitive impairments in Down Syndrome, prevent noise-related hearing loss, fight certain types of prostate cancer, and even enhance cognition in healthy animals.

Rapid Mental Rejuvenation: Experimental Drug Reverses Age-Related Cognitive Decline Within Days
Rapid mental rejuvenation in old mice suggests age-related losses may be broadly reversible. Just a few doses of an experimental drug can reverse age-related declines in memory and mental flexibility in mice, according to a new study by UC San Francisco scientists.…
Impact of COVID-19 restrictions on pre-school children's eating, activity and sleep behaviours: a qualitative study
The spring COVID-19 lockdown negatively impacted on pre-school children's eating, activity, and sleep routines. While some positive changes were reported, there were widespread reports of lack of routines, habits, and boundaries which, at least in the short-term, were likely to have been detrimental for child health and development," the researchers concluded in the study.

International travelers may soon be required to get COVID-19 vaccination before flying
Qantas Chief Executive Alan Joyce said he's been talking to his counterparts at other airlines around the world about the possibility of a “vaccination passport” for international travelers.
“We are looking at changing our terms and conditions to say for international travelers, that we will ask people to have the vaccination before they get on the aircraft,” Joyce told Australia's Network Nine television.
"But certainly for international visitors coming out, and people leaving the country, we think that’s a necessity,” he said.
Korean Air, said Tuesday there’s a real possibility that airlines will require that passengers be vaccinated .
Chung said there are already a variety of discussions within the industry to ensure safer travel during the pandemic. These include trials of “Common Pass,” an app endorsed by the World Economic Forum that aims to provide a standardized format for airlines to evaluate the coronavirus test results of passengers to determine whether they should travel.

Under-the-skin surveillance
“ In recent years both governments and corporations have been using ever more sophisticated technologies to track, monitor and manipulate people. If we are not careful, the epidemic might mark an important watershed in the history of surveillance. Not only because it might normalise the deployment of mass surveillance tools in countries that have so far rejected them, but even more so because it signifies a dramatic transition from “over the skin” to “under the skin” surveillance.
Hitherto, when your finger touched the screen of your smartphone and clicked on a link, the government wanted to know what exactly your finger was clicking on. But with coronavirus, the focus of interest shifts. Now the government wants to know the temperature of your finger and the blood-pressure under its skin. “

'This is not science fiction,' say scientists pushing for 'neuro-rights'
Scientific advances from deep brain stimulation to wearable scanners are making manipulation of the human mind increasingly possible, creating a need for laws and protections to regulate use of the new tools, top neurologists said on Thursday.
