How a Nuclear Submarine Officer Learned to Live in Tight Quarters
,

Like a heavily watered-down version of a Buddhist monk taking solitary retreat in a cave, my extended submarine confinements opened something up in my psyche and I gave myself permission to let go of my anxieties.
Transiting underneath a vast ocean in a vessel with a few inches of steel preventing us from drowning helps put things into perspective. Now that I’m out of the Navy, I have more appreciation for the freedoms of personal choice, a fresh piece of fruit, and 24 hours in a day.
My only regrets are not keeping a journal or having the wherewithal to discover the practice of meditation under the sea.

Today, I’m learning Turkish so I can understand more about what’s happening around me. I’m doing Kundalini yoga (a moving meditation that focuses on breathwork) and running on the treadmill (since I’m no longer concerned about my footsteps being detected on sonar). On my submarine, I looked at photos to stay connected to the world I left behind, knowing that I’d return soon enough. Now our friend who is isolating in our apartment in San Francisco sends us pictures of our cat and gives us reports about how the neighborhood has changed.

It’s hard to imagine that we’ll resume our lifestyles exactly as they were. But the submariner in me is optimistic that we have it in us to adapt to whatever conditions are waiting for us when it’s safe to ascend from the depths and return to the surface.

On Holy Saturday, millions of Poles head towards churches all over the country to bless their traditional Easter baskets.

Easter baskets usually contain eggs, bread, salt, sausages, bundt cake, dairy products and some kind of sweets. Another component of the basket is a miniature lamb, most often made of sugar, butter or dough. The basket is usually decorated with sprigs of boxwood and is lined with the traditional Polish folk fabric.

The food blessed in the church (“święconka”), remains untouched until Sunday morning, when it is shared with the relatives during Easter breakfast.

#Easter #Tradition in the #CzechRepublic is called 'pomlázka': boys and men will be equipped with decorated whips from willow branches and go after the girls and women to smack their buttocks.
This shall also rejuvenate the girls. In return the men will receive small gifts.
January 2018 US diplomatic cables warned of coronavirus leaking from Wuhan lab

The idea that it was just a totally natural occurrence is circumstantial. The evidence it leaked from the lab is circumstantial. Right now, the ledger on the side of it leaking from the lab is packed with bullet points and there’s almost nothing on the other side,

the Chinese government’s original story — that the virus emerged from a seafood market in Wuhan — is shaky. Research by Chinese experts published in the Lancet in January showed the first known patient, identified on Dec. 1, had no connection to the market, nor did more than one-third of the cases in the first large cluster. Also, the market didn’t sell bats.

Diaphragmatic Breathing Exercises

Diaphragmatic breathing is a type of breathing exercise that helps strengthen your diaphragm
an important muscle that helps you breathe as it represents 80% of breathing.

This breathing exercise is also sometimes called( belly breathing or abdominal breathing).
When the diaphragm is functioning effectively in its role as the primary muscle of inspiration, ventilation is efficient and the oxygen consumption of the muscles of ventilation is low during relaxed (tidal) breathing.

When a patient relies substantially on the accessory muscles of inspiration, the mechanical work of breathing (oxygen consumption ) increases and the efficiency of ventilation decreases.

Controlled breathing techniques, which emphasize diaphragmatic breathing are designed to improve the efficiency of ventilation, decrease the work of breathing, increase the excursion of the diaphragm, and improve gas exchange and oxygenation.

Diaphragmatic breathing, or deep breathing,

is breathing that is done by contracting the diaphragm a muscle located horizontally between the thoracic cavity and abdominal cavity Air enters the lungs, the chest does not rise and the belly expands during this type of breathing. Diaphragmatic breathing is also known scientifically as apnea
which is a natural and relaxed form of breathing in all mammals. Eupnea occurs in mammals whenever they are in a state of relaxation, i.e. when there is no clear and present danger in their environment.

Study: Zen Meditation Really Does Clear the Mind

Their scans revealed that Zen training led to different activity in a set of brain regions known as the "default network," which is linked with spontaneous bursts of thought and wandering minds. After volunteers experienced in Zen were distracted by the computer, their brains returned faster to how they were before the interruption than novice brains did. This effect was especially striking in the angular gyrus, a brain region important for processing language.

"The regular practice of meditation may enhance the capacity to limit the influence of distracting thoughts,"

New coronavirus mutation strain could threaten vaccine development

The observation of this study raised the alarm that Sars-CoV-2 mutation with varied epitope profile could arise at any time,” the researchers said. “[This] means current vaccine development against Sars-CoV-2 is at great risk of becoming futile.”
