⋯ Recruitment is done by sheikhs at mosques.

Back in 2011-2013, sheikhs used to stop young men after prayers and talk to them about heaven and jihad and how Syrians need help to fight against an evil ruler. Many got persuaded and dragged into the war.

Little is spoken about the anti-Assad Lebanese militants that were recruited to fight against the Syrian army.

Recruitment slowed down in 2014-2016.
⋯ I remember when I was at Imam Ali mosque in Tariq Al-Jadideh in 2012 on a Friday.

I still remember how as the only Shia there it was very awkward when the imam, during his speech, stated: “May God curse the Rawafid (Shia), may God curse Hezbullah, may God curse Bashar.”
