⋯ Pending confirmation, two 107 mm rockets were fired in retaliation to the continuous Israeli desecration of Al-Aqsa Mosque.

In the morning, the occupation forces stormed the mosque courtyards, once again forcing out Muslim worshippers, to secure access of hundreds of settlers to the holy site, reportedly, 561 settlers.

What are Israeli incursions in Al-Aqsa? (Analysis)

Palestinians refer to the unsanctioned entry of any Israeli into Al-Aqsa Mosque complex as settler incursions.

1⃣ Israel has long bypassed the Waqf, ignoring the ‘status quo’

In the arrangement between Israel and Jordan (the custodian of Jerusalem's Islamic and Christian sites), non-Muslims can visit Al-Aqsa under the supervision of the Waqf, a joint Jordanian-Palestinian Islamic trust. Only Muslims are allowed to pray in Al-Aqsa, and Jews can by the Western Wall, while Israel retains security control over the whole area.

The outlet Middle East Eye explains in an article on 15 April: «Before 2000, the Waqf controlled the visits through a booking system. This was rescinded by Israel after the Second Intifada, or uprising, which ended in 2005. Now, dozens of Israeli settlers and far-right activists tour the courtyard of the mosque almost on a daily basis.»

2⃣ The format of the incursions is getting too intensive

Settlers' daily ‘tours’ go Sundays through Thursdays, between 7:30am and 10:30am, and between 1pm and 2pm (i.e. when Muslims don't have prayers). In the past, settlers used to avoid visiting on Muslim holidays. On Israeli holidays, up to 1,500 settlers raid the mosque nowadays.

«Each tour lasts from 30 minutes to an hour, starting from the Moroccan Gate [on the Western wall] (...) In the past, tours used to last 10-15 minutes and start at Moroccan Gate and end at Chain Gate a few metres away. The tours have grown steadily over the years despite repeated objections from Palestinians.»

3⃣ Jews perform rituals, increasingly backed by the police

The Israeli police used to ask Jewish visitors to stop genuflections or loud prayers, since non-Muslim prayer is a very sensitive issue. But, as Middle East Eye explains, «with no Israeli laws explicitly preventing Jews from doing so, this policy seems to have changed recently».

«The Waqf has documented instances where prayers and rituals were carried out during the raids. In August 2021, the New York Times reported that the Israeli government had ‘quietly’ been allowing Jewish prayer without publicising it.» [...] «By allocating specific times for Israeli entries, and allowing them to pray there, Palestinians fear the groundwork is being layed to divide the mosque between Muslims and Jews, similar to how the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron was divided in the 1990s.»

4⃣ Israeli groups threaten the Islamic identity of Al-Aqsa

The occupation's officials have for long trampled on the mosque’s sanctity. Middle East Eye recalls: «Soldiers who captured [Jerusalem] entered the mosque courtyards on 7 June 1967 while raising the Israeli flag and banned Muslim prayer for a week». In 1990, «an Israeli group known as the ‘Temple Mount and Eretz Yisrael Faithful Movement’ attempted to place a cornerstone for the Third Temple in the compound. Israeli forces responded with live fire to quell confrontations and protests by Palestinians, killing more than 20 and wounding at least 150.»

Groups recently renewed calls to make Passover sacrifices. Yet, many rabbis forbid to even visit the site; Al-Monitor noted in 2021 that «a warning sign reminds visitors that ultra-Orthodox and other Orthodox rabbis say it is forbidden to enter until the Messiah comes». But a few meters ahead, «another sign greets visitors warmly [...] and details the religious laws governing the site, according to the rabbis that allow entry. [...] More restrictions include not visiting in leather shoes and that women must undergo a ritual bath before visiting.»

5⃣ Palestinians try to stop the dispossession of Al-Aqsa

«To stop the incursions, Palestinians have long organised what is known as Ribat, a social and religious sit-in activity in which worshippers gather in the mosque for extended hours and even days», Middle East Eye explains.

«The purpose of the Ribat is to populate the premises of the mosque at all times to prevent Israeli settlers from entering it, especially during Muslim holidays. The Israeli police have on multiple occasions raided Al-Aqsa to clear it of worshippers participating in Ribat, particularly ahead of Jewish holidays.»
