Bamlak Tessema, an Ethiopian referee who's made quite a name for himself, has announced his retirement in a letter to FIFA.
After an incredible career that included officiating at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, and the 2021 Kuwait STC Premier League, he's hanging up his whistle.
Bamlak was one of the few African referees trusted to work at the top level, and his impressive journey highlighted with the 2023 CAF Champions League final truly sets him apart in African refereeing.
He leaves behind a legacy that makes Ethiopian football proud.

Yimtubezina Museum & Cultural Center has partnered with scholar and historian Ian Campbell to present its eleventh exhibition, Neger Bemessale, Tej be Birillé: The Story of the Birillé in Ethiopia which has started from 20 September 2025 to will continue to 18 January 2026.
The noscript, drawn from an Amharic saying meaning “Speak in proverbs, drink honey wine with a Birillé,” reflects the cultural symbolism of this traditional vessel.
The exhibition explores the birillé’s history, design, craftsmanship, evolution, and social significance, featuring items collected by Campbell over 35 years through extensive travel, market visits in places such as Addis Ababa’s Merkato and Harar, and relationships with traders and donors.
