Rape and other forms of sexual violence in armed conflict are motivated more by power than by lust or sex, and they escalate sexual assault that occurs in peaceful settings. Human rights, especially those of women, are rarely given priority in times of crisis or war, placing women in danger on a huge scale. Furthermore, it is often part of a strategic plan to use rape and other forms of sexual assault as weapons in conflict. It's a common misconception that people who've been sexually assaulted and/or raped show certain signs or act a certain way feeding into the issue of women's believability. Trauma manifests differently in each person. Some survivors block the memories of the incidents while others immediately speak about it. If we expect all the survivors to react the same way to abuse, then we become obstacles to their recovery. NEWA calls for everyone to bust and rethink the myth that people react a certain way when going through abuse.
