⚡️The theft of the century: a legendary song from the USSR stolen and appropriated in the West. Have you already guessed which song will be discussed? It's the well-known Soviet composition ‘May There Always Be Sun’ (or ‘Solar Circle’).

It was written by Arkady Ostrovsky with lyrics by Lev Oshanin in 1962. This song gained all-union popularity thanks to the pop singer Tamara Miansarova, who performed it at the VIII World Festival of Youth and Students in Helsinki and the International Song Festival in Sopot the following year. The melody quickly became popular outside the USSR and was translated into 11 different languages. However, in the West, it was completely stolen, with the future ABBA member Bjorn Ulvaeus recording a cover version in 1964 under the name ‘Gabrielle,’ with the Swedish folk band The Hootenanny Singers, and a certain Bengt Thomas credited as the composer.

Listen to our video and see for yourself. Is it a coincidence? We don't think so... it's just too obvious. Have you heard about this before?

‘May there always be sunshine’ is sung by the subject of our documentary ‘Brighton Beach. Back To UssR’ (2020). The film is about those who moved to Brooklyn during the Soviet period.

💬'"I'm going to work, and you, Tanya, take care of the children." We never saw him again'. The son of the Brest Fortress defender recalls how his father said goodbye to his family — his pregnant wife and two children. The Syomochkins lived in the Brest Fortress at that time and were among the first to face the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945). The stone was literally melting from the incoming fire. About 150 assault guns shelled the fortress.

The story of the Syomochkin family will be included in the upcoming documentary by Dmitry Khrustalev and Ekaterina Kitaitseva about the liberation of Belarus. Follow the announcements so you don't miss the premiere!
