To his surprise, he discovered that this unassuming janitor, William J. Crawford, was a Medal of Honor recipient. Crawford had never mentioned his wartime heroics and was content with his quiet life as a janitor.

Crawford had initially been awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously, as the Army mistakenly believed he had died in action. The medal was presented to his father instead. After the war, Crawford received the medal, placed it in a box, took off his uniform, and lived a modest life, away from public attention. When the cadet "rediscovered" him, Crawford expressed only one regret: that the medal had never been pinned on his chest by the president.

Word of Crawford's story eventually reached the White House, and President Ronald Reagan personally presented the Medal of Honor to William J. Crawford, the janitor, forty years after the actions that earned him the nation's highest military honor.
