Israel claimed they mistook the 'USS Liberty' for the Egyptian cargo ship 'El Quseir,' which bears no resemblance to the American vessel.

Official CIA documents indicate that the weather was clear on the day of the attack, and the ship's hull number, 'GTR-5,' along with the American flag, were prominently displayed and visible to Israeli forces.
