They are very primitive, but extremely destructive at close range. You just fill up a huge canister with explosives and fire it at the enemy, hoping it impacts.

They are especially effective against high density urban areas (i.e. civilian targets) and that's why they saw a lot of use by the Syrian rebels in the Syrian civil war.
