However, what does "defecting" really mean in this case? Well, a couple things are important to note.

First of all, this guy might not speak for his entire regiment. He might announce his support for Prigozhin, while 70% of his soldiers disagree.

Second of all, "defecting" in this case just means showing support. Because as of now, there as no signs of anyone actually joining Wagner in their fight.

Most of these defections are just attempts at getting on the good side of Prigozhin, in case he comes out on top.

They obey whoever pays the most money, and they are simply a bunch of dishonorable mercenaries.

Besides that, they have a whole list of massacres and human rights abuses under their name.

- List of Wagner atrocities:

1. The Moura Massacre, Mali. Wagner killed 500 civilians. (March 27, 2022 – March 31, 2022)

2. The Aigbado Massacre, Central African Republic. At least 65 civillians murdered, including women and children. (January 16-17, 2022)

3. The Bongboto Massacre, Central African Republic. Wagner fighters summarily executed at least 13 unarmed civillians, shooting them in the head before dumping them next to the road. (July 21, 2021)

4. Wagner war crimes in Syria.
In Syria, Wagner is known for being extremely brutal. A Syrian Army defector, Hamadi Bouti, was killed using a sledgehammer. They crushed his limbs before beheading his lifeless body, cutting off his arms and lighting it on fire, and sending the video to his mother. (2017)

What is Prigozhin going to get for agreeing to stand down? He won't just do all of this for nothing.

If Putin agrees to fire Shoigu and Gerasimov, Putin's political career will come to a screeching end, as this would be a huge sign of weakness, and his legitimacy would be at stake.

As a president, you cannot cave in to the demands of an armed rebellion. If you do, what prevents others from using violence to achieve their goals from you in the future?

The only option is for Putin to take resolute action to destroy the Wagner company on its way, and to punish all of its members that participated.

However, perhaps Putin made a 'fake' deal with Prigozhin to borrow some time, to shore up the Russian defenses, before this can truly happen.

We will see.

A military rebellion drove to Moscow, shot down multiple Russian airplanes and helicopters on the way, and now a deal was made and everyone will pretend nothing happened.
