Google Secretly Tracks What You Buy Offline Using MasterCard Data

Over a week after Google admitted the company tracks user's location even after they disable location history, it has now been revealed that the tech giant has signed a secret deal with MasterCard that allows it to track what users buy offline.

According to four unidentified people with knowledge of the deal cited by the news outlet, Google and MasterCard reached the agreement after a four-year negotiation, wherein all MasterCard transaction data in the U.S. has been encrypted and transmitted to Google.

Free Software is at risk! On the 12th of September the EU is getting ready to vote on a "Copyright Reform" package, which undermines the foundations upon which Free Software is built. The proposed Article 13 of the EU Copyright Directive targets every online service that allows its users to upload and share content with each other, including code hosting platforms.

Let’s call upon European policy makers to delete the threat posed against Free Software in the Copyright Directive.

The widespread reuse of Free Software is a foundation of the Internet, as code can be used, studied, shared and improved by each user. It would be wrong to take this freedom for granted. Since most of the internet medium is compiled and reused as Free Software, the ruling would dismantle the media ecosystem.

We are getting ready for the EU’s vote on a "Copyright Reform" package, in order to remove a section of its terms and conditions that looks to hamper Free Software development and code-sharing. Every Internet user, who shares information, media, and code with the public, has been targeted in the proposed directive. The idea in Article 13 is that Free Software is a cause for copyright violations and that, therefore, upload-filters should be created by internet platforms.

There are even a variety of types of governmental organisations, facilitated and powered by Free Software. In fact, on just one of the major code hosting platforms, over 128 government organisations from over 17 European governments have, in total, licensed 4594 instances of Free Software on code-hosting platforms, at the time of writing. They are, as follows: Open Government initiatives, Cutural heritage directories, Ecology research departments and agencies, Digitalisation projects, Emergency Services, Information Systems, Election Services, Transport networks, Education institutions, Energy services, Mapping and Geographical research institutes, Statistical bureaus, Business departments, Law courts, Security groups, and Departments of Finance.

So, for those inside the EU, now’s the time to do your bit and to communicate with an MEP, who represents your country, in order to notify your support for Free Software in the face of Article 13 in the Copyright Directive.

Do that at saveyourinternet.eu, where there are tips on who and how to address and send your message. When you’re ready, you can even use a tool, created by EDRi and Open Media, to directly call and e-mail your MEP.

Let’s call upon European policy makers to delete the threat posed against Free and Open Source Software in the Copyright Directive.

"Users of MicroG on Android Oreo will notice that their apps using Google for notifications are no longer receiving them. This is because of Google pushing Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) as a replacement for Google Cloud Messaging (GCM) for notifications. MicroG currently only has support for the older GCM protocol, so apps using the newer FCM cannot register for notifications.

Some people have found that installing older versions of the app will cause it to register via GCM, then an update will continue using GCM. The problem of lacking support for FCM still remains.

A solution to this problem is to just not use apps that require Play Services at all, and request that developers of apps you use requiring Play Services implement an alternate method of pushing notifications.

This doesn’t work if you need a certain app that still requires Play Services, and certainly won’t work if trying to convince someone to switch to using MicroG. So, we need to get FCM implemented. Open Source enthusiasts will suggest that I do it if I think it needs to be done - I would, and I may in the future, but not any time soon. I have too many projects already that need to be worked on. So here’s hoping someone else is able to get something working…"

Just to help a few people trying to figure out if push messaging is working or not, please check the following:

✅ you are using newest microg version 0.2.5-12879 running (ale5000 installer is updated and should be very helpful)
✅ you deactivated battery optimization for microg
✅ you activated google device registration
✅ you get all the green checkmarks in microg diagnostics
✅ you made sure nothing is blocking network traffic to mtalk.google.com (e.g. afwall, adaway, ...)
✅ you deleted the app you have troubles with and installed it fresh after updating to microg 0.2.5-12879
✅ you have not used backup solutions, like oandbackup, titaniumbackup, ... to restore app data
✅ you can also use the push notification tester to check. I just tried it and it works.

To verify incoming messages, look in you logs and search for "GmsGcmMcsInput". You should see the heartbeat and Incoming messages. In the incoming messages there should be a category stating your apps package. This should be messages your receive via push. (@mar-v-in I hope this is correct?!)

/e/ first beta soon to be released 🔆

Next week, on Tuesday or Wednesday, we will release the first beta of /e/ mobile OS.

I will then describe choices that have been done, what’s in, what’s not in, what remains to do, what to test and how. And probably a challenge for testers.

Part of the tests will involve the use of /e/ services, such as /e/ identity accounts. This will be easy for our early backers who got an @e.email email address. As we cannot open these (beta) services widely yet, we will open such test accounts to a limited number of users. All those who already applied as testers will receive an /e/ test account.

Other testers will have to send an email to contact@e.email with “test account” in subject (it will be processed automatically so check for typos). We will open a first batch of 100 test accounts, and a second batch of 200 test accounts.

* Supported devices*

Of course we cannot support the 17K+ known Android devices. As the /e/ ROM itself is forked from LineageOS we can build for all LOS 14.1 (Android Nougat) supported devices, and not yet for LOS 15 (Android Oreo) supported devices (work in progress).

Anyway we had to focus on a limited list of devices that we could test in real. And our build server infrastructure is also limiting this number at the moment (call: any hoster to lend some build servers to the e.foundation project? https://e.foundation/contact/).

Anyhow, we have extended the list to several devices that were demanded a lot on our website, and we will continue to do so.
