🔴 Important tips for your Rank Order List (ROL):

🔹 The matching algorithm attempts to place you in the most preferred program possible, so be sure to rank programs in order of YOUR TRUE PREFERENCE and not where you think you will match. Go for your “reach” program.

🔹 Rank only those programs where you are able and would be happy to train. Putting a program on your ROL creates a binding commitment if a match occurs, so review carefully each program’s eligibility requirements and the contract you will be expected to sign. You should receive that information from programs during the application/interview process.

🔹 Do not rank programs where you did not interview. Programs do not rank candidates they have not interviewed, and no match will occur.

🔹 Be realistic about your competitiveness and the competitiveness of your preferred specialty (review Charting Outcomes in the Match). Consider creating a ROL that includes a mix of competitive and less competitive specialties and programs, and be sure to include at least one “safety” program.

🔹 Do not wait until the last minute to enter your ROL in the R3® system. The servers may be overloaded and working slowly.

🔹 Do not make last minute changes to your ROL. Most such changes are not well thought out, and applicants frequently regret them.

🔻 When a ROL is complete, it must be certified to be included when the matching algorithm is processed. The “Certify List” button in the R3 system prompts applicants to enter their unique R3 system password to confirm certification. By certifying a ROL, applicants are entering a binding commitment to train at any program with which they match (View Match Participation Agreement).

Applicants can confirm that the list is certified in two ways:
1️⃣ The “Applicant Status” field in the R3 system will change from “Ranking” to “Certified”
2️⃣ A confirmation email will be sent to the primary email address on file in the R3 system.

⚠️ Changing and Re-Certifying a ROL:
Changes can be made to a ROL after it has been certified; however, if a certified ROL is changed in any way, the new version MUST be re-certified to be used in the Match. The R3 system does NOT retain previous versions of a ROL, regardless of whether it was certified.

Applicants in the Specialties Matching Service® may log in to the Registration, Ranking, and Results® (R3®) system using their username and password at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time on their Fellowship Match Day to view their Match results.

📧 Applicants in the Main Residency Match® will learn at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time on Monday of Match Week whether they matched to a program by logging in to the R3 system with their username and password. The messages that can appear in the R3 system, are listed below. At 12:00 p.m. ET on Friday of Match Week, applicants learn where they matched by logging in to the R3 system.

📧 Applicants will be presented with one of the following messages on Monday of Match Week:

1️⃣ Congratulations, you have matched!

This message will be displayed for applicants who:
- matched to a categorical, primary, or reserved (physician only) program.
- matched to a PGY-1 preliminary and PGY-2 advanced program.

2️⃣ Congratulations, you have matched to an advanced position but not a preliminary-year position.

This message will be displayed for any applicant who matched to a PGY-2 advanced position.

Applicants who receive this message and who are deemed eligible to enter GME on July 1 in the year of the Main Residency Match will have access to the List of Unfilled Programs and will be eligible to participate in the Match Week Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program® (SOAP®) obtain a preliminary position, if needed.

3️⃣ Congratulations, you have matched to a one year position.

This message will be displayed for any applicant who matched to a PGY-1 preliminary position.

Applicants who receive this message and who are deemed eligible to enter GME education on July 1 in the year of the Main Residency Match will have access to the List of Unfilled Programs and will be eligible to participate in SOAP to obtain an advanced position, if needed.

4️⃣ We are sorry, you did not match to any position.

This message will be displayed for any applicant who did not match to any program. For applicants participating as a partner of a couple, this statement also may be displayed if the applicant listed the 999999999 program code on the primary rank order list to indicate ‘”No Match”. Applicants who receive this message and who are deemed eligible to enter GME on July 1 in the year of the Main Residency Match will have access to the List of Unfilled Programs and will be eligible to participate in SOAP for any category of unfilled positions.

5️⃣ You are not matched because you did not rank any programs.

This message will be displayed for any applicant who certified a rank order list with no programs. Applicants who receive this message and who are deemed eligible to enter GME on July 1 in the year of the Main Residency Match will have access to the List of Unfilled Programs and will be eligible to participate in SOAP for any category of unfilled positions.
