🇦🇺 PhD Scholarships at the Research School of Astronomy & Astrophysics of the Australian National University 🇦🇺

The Research School of Astronomy & Astrophysics (RSAA) at the Australian National University (ANU) invites applications from outstanding undergraduate and master’s students of all nationalities for several fully funded PhD scholarships to commence in 2025. Candidates will be considered based on merit, with the primary criterion for selection being formal university education and training in Astronomy, Physics, Mathematics, or Astronomical Instrumentation. Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated track record of research experience in Astrophysics.

ANU is one of Australia's premier universities. Our astronomers have won the Nobel Prize, the Prime Minister's Science Prize, and Australian Research Council Laureate, Federation, and Future Fellowships. RSAA academics include members of the National Academies of Science in Australia, the USA, the UK, the Netherlands, and Spain. Abstract

We revisit entanglement wedge reconstruction in AdS/CFT using the Petz recovery channel. In the case of a spherical region on the boundary, we show that the Petz map reproduces the AdS-Rindler HKLL reconstruction. Moreover, for a generic subregion of the boundary, we could obtain the same boundary representation of a local bulk field lies in the entanglement wedge as the one proposed earlier in JLMS paper using properties of the modular flow.

In this talk, I aim to draw attentions to the importance of research on different aspects of hadrons as nonperturbative objects made of quarks and gluons. In particular, introducing the interactions of hadrons with different currents (electromagnetic, weak, strong and graviton-like!) I will discuss how can we get knowledge on the structure of matter, investigate some effects in SM & BSM physics, search for dark matter & dark energy and make scenarios to address the matter-antimatter asymmetry!

The Institute for Astronomy (IfA) is located at the historic and beautiful Royal Observatory Edinburgh on Blackford Hill and makes up approximately one third of the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh.

خلاصه مقاله:
مقاله "تفکر ریاضی آن چیزی نیست که فکر میکنید" از مجله Quanta به بررسی ماهیت تفکر ریاضی از دیدگاه ریاضیدان دیوید بسیس میپردازد. بسیس معتقد است که همه افراد قادر به تفکر ریاضی هستند و میتوانند از آن بهرهمند شوند. او تأکید میکند که تفکر ریاضی فقط درباره منطق و حل مسئله نیست، بلکه شامل شهود و خلاقیت نیز میشود.

بسیس پیشنهاد میکند که روش تدریس ریاضی در مدارس بیش از حد بر منطق تمرکز دارد و به شهود توجه کافی نمیکند. او باور دارد که تفکر ریاضی باید به عنوان گفتگویی بین عقل و غریزه دیده شود و میتوان آن را از طریق تمرین بهبود بخشید، مشابه یک فعالیت بدنی. او همچنین بر اهمیت پذیرش اشتباهات و حفظ کنجکاوی کودکانه تأکید میکند.

مقاله همچنین به این موضوع میپردازد که چگونه ریاضیدانان برجستهای مانند بیل تورستون و الکساندر گروتندیک مهارتهای خود را با پرسشگری مداوم و اصلاح شهودات خود توسعه دادند. کتاب بسیس با عنوان "ریاضیات: دنیای مخفی شهود و کنجکاوی" هدف دارد تا تجربه درونی انجام ریاضیات را توضیح دهد و همه را تشویق میکند تا از تواناییهای شهودی خود برای بهبود تفکر ریاضی استفاده کنند.

Abstract:

The pre-injector of the Iranian Light Source Facility consists of a radiofrequency electron gun, longitudinal and transverse focusing magnets, linear accelerators, and several other ancillary parts. Since the emittance of the ILSF electron beam at the end of the linear accelerators reaches about 8 mm-mrad, we intend to achieve a lower emittance by designing an electrostatic electron gun. Also, electrostatic electron gun pre-injectors do not require alpha magnets and instead have several beam bunchers, contributing to this type's lower emittance.

Reducing the emittance in the electron pre-injector does not have much effect on reducing the emittance in the storage ring. However, the more we can minimize the beam emittance at the beginning of its production, the better. Because the beam emittance may gradually increase along the path. Reducing the emittance of the pre-injector leads to a reduction in the dimensions of the vacuum chamber and the opening of the magnets in the booster ring, and reduces the cost of the magnets and their energy consumption.

In this study, we try to design a high-current electrostatic electron gun with low emittance and investigate the electron beam dynamics and beam emittance with the SPIFFE code and GPT code.
