Android 12L Developer Preview 1 in action
Android 12L tends to bring better optimisation for large screen devices. Here are some of the early preview with the first Android 12L build. People at 9To5Google adjust the screen size to match Galaxy Z Fold 3, giving us a early preview of how it will look as it is one of the first device to receive the new update.

One of the new changes is the quick settings panel placed on the left and notification center is on the right, it is working on the Fold 3's landscape display for now. The recent app screen shows one app in large view with a new “Split” shortcut underneath, the rest is shown as two columns in a smaller view.

The taskbar in Android 12L make it possible to open app in split screen by dragging the app to one of the screen side without leaving the current app. App pairs are live too, which allow you to instantly launch two apps at the same time.

Android 12L will make it release by Q1 2022 and beta release for Pixel in December. (9To5Google)

Switch between wallpapers quickly on Android 12L
As Android 12 introduced Material You which will extract color from your device wallpaper, if you would like to change the accent color every day, there could be a useful addition added in Android 12L.

By long pressing the home screen, you will see the usual three options menu, with the wallpapers & style option showing your currently set wallpaper and four other wallpapers. If you want to change your device accent color in a matter of a few clicks, this new change will benefit you.

As this is just the first build of Android 12L, more stuff could be added to enhance the experience in the future. (Mishaal Rahman)

*Not sure whether Google will add this or not, just my own thought. Schedule to use 7 different wallpapers in a week?

Screen flickering problem happens on many Pixel 6 & Pixel 6 Pro units
Those who pre-ordered the Pixel 6 are starting to get it. Well, Pixel tradition hardware issue is still here, many people reported a weird display flicker that pops up when they hit the power button while their phones are turned off.

Someone on Reddit posted about the issue, and many owners also tried that and said they met the same issue. The issue occurs for most people when their phone is fully turned off and they briefly hit the power button repeatedly. At least one person said it even happen while the phone is turned on, way worse.

Google Pixel are known for hardware issue anyway, and here a list:
• Pixel 1: Microphone failure
• Pixel 2: Camera broken
• Pixel 3: EDL mode
• Pixel 4: Discharge & random shutdown
• Pixel 5: Display-body gap

Weirdly there no mid-range Pixel in the list, but anyway every major generations of it have at least one hardware issue, hope Google improves it with the next Pixel. (Android Police)

Pixel 6 Pro heavily delayed for shipping, retail stock is scarce
Google Pixel 6 series seem to be the best devices Google ever made to date, and Google heavily promoted it via many platforms, making it popular and it is almost out of stock for the Pixel 6 Pro.

Google Store has put out a notice on the Pixel 6 Pro introduction site that following the "high demand" during the pre-order period, the Pixel 6 Pro models may have hard time to deliver the device during these periods as the stock is scarce. You could join the waitlist to get notified when the device is restock, or buy it via other retailers.

Other retailers are also reporting that the Pixel 6 Pro stock is all sold out, which even leave only scalpers asking upwards of $1,500 for the device on Amazon. Meanwhile Best Buy and Target marked as sold out, B&H marked Coming Soon status.

For more info, check it out over here. (9To5Google)

*Pro tip: Buy it a few months later for a cheaper price from trusted third-party seller.

Some Pixel 6 owners also faced green tint, second punch hole issue
Previous post

A follow up post of the Pixel 6 display issue. Besides the display flickering issue during power off state which we written earlier (link above), there are some other issues that other owners faced too.

There is a green tint on the display of the smaller Pixel 6. It kind of common across many flagship phones with OLED panel, but anyway most of the device have it fixed via software update, so hope Google addressed it as soon as possible.

And there another issue on the Pixel 6 Pro, with one guy reporting there is a second punch hole on the phone. Well, small issue as the store replaced the defective phone for him. It is a rare issue when producing the display, but anyway hope Google is aware of it when producing the phone. (GSMArena)

Google to fix Android's emoji problem by implementing Updateable System Fonts and EmojiCompat
Article link

Sometimes when you are reading text with emoji, you might noticed a "tofu" or the broken image which denoted by a box with an X in it, absolutely frustrating and it not only you.

Many Android users can't view latest emoji
A Google representative said 96% of Android users don't get to see the latest emojis, in stark contrast to the 16% of iOS users who are unable to see the latest emoji. In certain situations, newer emojis display on older Android version may split up into different part of components, making the user who is seeing need to try figure what it means sometimes.

Current situation of Android emoji update
We needed to wait for an OS upgrade to get new emoji update before Android 12. Also some OEMs update take so much longer to reach, which make the situation much worse. Finally, Google is thinking of some ways to bring every emoji available to all Android users in all apps, with two methods.

Solution 1: Updatable System Fonts (Android 12 and above)
Starting with Android 12, Google introduced updateable system fonts, and the first font that they will update is the emoji font. The emoji font files are stored at /data/fonts/files on Android 12. It is available to read for all apps but writeable only by the system_server and init.

Solution 2: EmojiCompat with AppCompat 1.4 (Android 4.4. to Android 11)
Many users, of course, are still not on the latest Android 12. If Google want to solve this issue for all Android users, they gotta do it for older Android versions too. And here, their solution is the EmojiCompat support library.

AppCompat 1.4 incorporates EmojiCompat, which means that all apps using AppCompat 1.4 will automatically support modern emojis. What the app developers need to do is integrate/bump your AppCompat version to 1.4, and latest emoji could be display on devices running older Android versions till 4.4.

Android Emoji Policy for Android 12
In these highlights, Google has also added Android Emoji Policy for apps running on Android 12 and above. These apps must comply with the latest Unicode version within 4 months of public availability, and they must do so in either of these three ways:
• If AppCompat is already in use, make sure emoji is enabled.
• Use an existing EmojiCompat library across all surfaces within the app. This should work with custom views that directly use StaticLayout.
• Update the handling and font/images for emoji based on the latest version of Unicode.

Really long articles for sure, but a really great addition to Android. For more information, check the full article from the link above or use the Instant View feature on mobile.

*One pro tip here, try to copy and paste it in Google Search and it will show up what the emoji means if you don't see the emoji.
96 out of 100 Android users do not see the latest emoji
