Google to fix Android's emoji problem by implementing Updateable System Fonts and EmojiCompat
Article link

Sometimes when you are reading text with emoji, you might noticed a "tofu" or the broken image which denoted by a box with an X in it, absolutely frustrating and it not only you.

Many Android users can't view latest emoji
A Google representative said 96% of Android users don't get to see the latest emojis, in stark contrast to the 16% of iOS users who are unable to see the latest emoji. In certain situations, newer emojis display on older Android version may split up into different part of components, making the user who is seeing need to try figure what it means sometimes.

Current situation of Android emoji update
We needed to wait for an OS upgrade to get new emoji update before Android 12. Also some OEMs update take so much longer to reach, which make the situation much worse. Finally, Google is thinking of some ways to bring every emoji available to all Android users in all apps, with two methods.

Solution 1: Updatable System Fonts (Android 12 and above)
Starting with Android 12, Google introduced updateable system fonts, and the first font that they will update is the emoji font. The emoji font files are stored at /data/fonts/files on Android 12. It is available to read for all apps but writeable only by the system_server and init.

Solution 2: EmojiCompat with AppCompat 1.4 (Android 4.4. to Android 11)
Many users, of course, are still not on the latest Android 12. If Google want to solve this issue for all Android users, they gotta do it for older Android versions too. And here, their solution is the EmojiCompat support library.

AppCompat 1.4 incorporates EmojiCompat, which means that all apps using AppCompat 1.4 will automatically support modern emojis. What the app developers need to do is integrate/bump your AppCompat version to 1.4, and latest emoji could be display on devices running older Android versions till 4.4.

Android Emoji Policy for Android 12
In these highlights, Google has also added Android Emoji Policy for apps running on Android 12 and above. These apps must comply with the latest Unicode version within 4 months of public availability, and they must do so in either of these three ways:
• If AppCompat is already in use, make sure emoji is enabled.
• Use an existing EmojiCompat library across all surfaces within the app. This should work with custom views that directly use StaticLayout.
• Update the handling and font/images for emoji based on the latest version of Unicode.

Really long articles for sure, but a really great addition to Android. For more information, check the full article from the link above or use the Instant View feature on mobile.

*One pro tip here, try to copy and paste it in Google Search and it will show up what the emoji means if you don't see the emoji.

Android 12L adds Unicode 14 support, added 37 new emoji
Android 12L meant to be a update to optimise tablets and foldables, but of course it still come with some minor updates, one of it is the Unicode 14 support.

Unicode 14.0 supposed to arrive in early 2021 but delayed as COVID-19 pushed back everything by six months. Anyway, the update is here and it is introducing 37 new emoji. The images attached show you how the new emoji will look like.

You can get access to the new emoji by using this Magisk module if you have a rooted Android device, then later check this site to see if you can view those emoji. Otherwise, you just gotta wait for Google to do that for you. (9To5Google)

As Mishaal Rahman covered before, the upcoming Android version will have themed boot animation.

Like in Android 12 Pixel Launcher search bar, users will see the Google logo taking part of the monet theming. For other OEMs, it gonna depend on how they implemented.
