We are looking for strong students to begin a PhD with a focus on the development of novel AI/ML models for hydrological prediction or optimization of water distribution systems. Positions will be fully-funded for four years.

Specific details about the project will be discussed with candidates based on their background and interests. Skills and experience sought for the positions include:
· Strong familiarity and demonstrated experience with PyTorch, TensorFlow, Keras and other similar libraries
· Previous experience with common deep learning architectures (LSTM, Transformers, CNN)
· Probabilistic methods
· Reinforcement learning
· Physics-informed machine learning (would be ideal, but not necessary)

Qualifications include a Masters in the areas of civil engineering, environmental engineering, water resources engineering, or a related field.

We are looking to fill one of the positions immediately; thus, preference will be given to qualified Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents. The other position can be filled as late as Fall 2025, but Spring 2025 is ideal.

We are looking for a post doc/graduate to address the challenging task of Extreme precipitation frequency analysis at the national scale (Italy).

The project activities will include:

Creation of maps of extremes at the national scale from satellite data
Trend detection and nonstationary design rainfall
Identification of spatial patterns in rainfall extremes
We look for a statistical hydrologist/statistician/atmospheric physicist/climate scientist.

Excellent skills in handling of large spatial datasets, scientific programming (matlab/R/python), scientific communication and writing are essential.

The position is for 12 months and is shared between the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (prof. Marco Marani) and the Department of Geosciences (myself) at the University of Padova.

A PhD position at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (Horn Point Laboratory) to work on Nature-based solutions



The student will work with Dr. William Nardin (wnardin@umces.edu). The Ph.D. student will start preferably in the winter of 2025. Dr. Akash Koppa's lab at the Department of Environmental Science and Technology at the University of Maryland, College Park is seeking a motivated PhD student to start in Fall 2025. The student will work on answering fundamental research questions related to how drylands form.


Project Denoscription: A rapidly warming climate is expected to accelerate this dryland expansion. Consequently, not only will societies face permanent water insecurity, but plant and animal biodiversity will be under threat. Despite these consequences, very little is known about the physical mechanisms which cause irreversible long-term drying of humid regions. An unexplored mechanistic pathway is how land–atmosphere feedbacks in local and upwind areas modulate the expansion and formation of drylands. Interested candidates are referred to Koppa et al. (2024), Science for preliminary evidence of the role land–atmosphere feedbacks in dryland expansion.


Role Denoscription: The student will work on a) coupling a Lagrangian atmospheric transport model with Earth system model simulations, b) developing a novel mathematical framework to decompose the source of drying into its moisture and heat origins, and c) using the aforementioned tools to develop a novel theory of dryland formation from a land–climate feedback perspective.


Preferred Qualifications: The successful candidate should a) have a Bachelors and/Masters degree in a related field (e.g. environmental science, climate science, Earth science, civil engineering), b) have experience in developing algorithms for exploratory data analysis in a programming language of their choice, c) have prior experience in numerical modeling.

The Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate in climate science focusing on cloud feedbacks. The successful candidate will explore relationships between modeled tropical climatology, deep convection, and high cloud feedbacks as part of a project funded through the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Regional and Global Model Analysis (RGMA) program. The overarching goal of this work will be to identify sources of inter-model spread in high cloud feedbacks and climate sensitivity among the latest generation of global climate models participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP).

The postdoctoral research associate will be advised by Dr. Kathleen Schiro (University of Virginia) and co-advised by Dr. Mark Zelinka (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory) and will have opportunities to travel to LLNL to develop and maintain active collaborations with scientists in the Program for Climate Model Diagnosis and Intercomparison (PCMDI). Responsibilities include (a) analyzing publicly-available CMIP5/6 output from multiple coordinated experiments, (b) analyzing and augmenting a perturbed physics ensemble (PPE) in the DOE’s Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM), (c) analyzing observational data to create constraints on cloud feedbacks through relevant atmospheric processes, (d) presenting work at conferences and engaging broadly in the cloud feedback community (e.g., through participation in workshops), and (e) publishing results in the peer-reviewed literature. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: A PhD in Atmospheric Science, Environmental Sciences, or a related field is required by the start date. Experience analyzing global climate model output to study atmospheric processes is required.

PhD Position in the Department of Oceanography & Coastal Science at Louisiana State University in Fall 2025.

Multiple topics are available, but particular areas of interest include understanding wave height reduction and ecosystem co-benefits using nature-based engineering techniques, sediment transport patterns and drivers through deltaic crevasses, and water discharge distribution throughout a river delta network. We are now looking for a

Postdoctoral Researcher in developing digital tools for peatland restoration monitoring 

to join us in Water, Energy and Environmental Engineering Research Unit at Faculty of Technology. DigiPeat project develops digital tools for peatland restoration monitoring that will support digital and green transition in restoration actions. By digitalizing processes and changes spatially and temporally, we assess and project the effects of peatland restoration on topography, vegetation, hydrology, and biogeochemistry. The project participates in documenting the first national intensive peatland restoration monitoring site with high spatio-temporal resolution. Digitalization will increase the acceptability and efficiency of peatland restoration and help to improve the peatland restoration success estimates. DigiPeat is Kvantum-institute Spearhead-project and is done together with Geography Research Unit.

Postdoctoral researcher task denoscription
The postdoctoral researcher will (1) use high-resolution hydrological and aquatic biogeochemistry monitoring data to evaluate peatland restoration impact, (2) Improve hydrological and biogeochemical modelling in peatland restoration cases, (3) Improve restoration success estimates for hydrological function and leaching in restored peatlands, and (4) make a synthesis on how high-resolution digital tools to can improve monitor of peatland functioning.

These work tasks will primarily focus on data processing and analysis, numerical modelling and written reporting of the work, but there can be some fieldwork related to high-frequency data collection and background data collection for numerical modelling purposes. There is a possibility for a research visit hosted by our collaborators in Germany or Scotland.
