Project Denoscription: A rapidly warming climate is expected to accelerate this dryland expansion. Consequently, not only will societies face permanent water insecurity, but plant and animal biodiversity will be under threat. Despite these consequences, very little is known about the physical mechanisms which cause irreversible long-term drying of humid regions. An unexplored mechanistic pathway is how land–atmosphere feedbacks in local and upwind areas modulate the expansion and formation of drylands. Interested candidates are referred to Koppa et al. (2024), Science for preliminary evidence of the role land–atmosphere feedbacks in dryland expansion.
Role Denoscription: The student will work on a) coupling a Lagrangian atmospheric transport model with Earth system model simulations, b) developing a novel mathematical framework to decompose the source of drying into its moisture and heat origins, and c) using the aforementioned tools to develop a novel theory of dryland formation from a land–climate feedback perspective.
Preferred Qualifications: The successful candidate should a) have a Bachelors and/Masters degree in a related field (e.g. environmental science, climate science, Earth science, civil engineering), b) have experience in developing algorithms for exploratory data analysis in a programming language of their choice, c) have prior experience in numerical modeling.

The Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate in climate science focusing on cloud feedbacks. The successful candidate will explore relationships between modeled tropical climatology, deep convection, and high cloud feedbacks as part of a project funded through the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Regional and Global Model Analysis (RGMA) program. The overarching goal of this work will be to identify sources of inter-model spread in high cloud feedbacks and climate sensitivity among the latest generation of global climate models participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP).
The postdoctoral research associate will be advised by Dr. Kathleen Schiro (University of Virginia) and co-advised by Dr. Mark Zelinka (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory) and will have opportunities to travel to LLNL to develop and maintain active collaborations with scientists in the Program for Climate Model Diagnosis and Intercomparison (PCMDI). to join us in Water, Energy and Environmental Engineering Research Unit at Faculty of Technology. DigiPeat project develops digital tools for peatland restoration monitoring that will support digital and green transition in restoration actions. By digitalizing processes and changes spatially and temporally, we assess and project the effects of peatland restoration on topography, vegetation, hydrology, and biogeochemistry. The project participates in documenting the first national intensive peatland restoration monitoring site with high spatio-temporal resolution. Digitalization will increase the acceptability and efficiency of peatland restoration and help to improve the peatland restoration success estimates. DigiPeat is Kvantum-institute Spearhead-project and is done together with Geography Research Unit.

There is a possibility for a research visit hosted by our collaborators in Germany or Scotland.

We are recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to join the i-SMART laboratory (https://web.stevens.edu/ismart/) at Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey, in the field of hydrology. The selected candidate will be involved in various projects to enhance streamflow forecasts and flood inundation mapping in large and small watersheds. We also have a particular interest in advancing research in multipurpose reservoir management through a combination of meteorologic and hydrologic forecasts and the optimization of reservoir operation.
Applicants should demonstrate:
- A strong background in hydrometeorology, hydraulics, and hydrology
- A proven ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals
- familiarity with reservoir management
- Excellent coding and data analysis skills
- Strong communication skills
