KU Leuven is looking for an enthusiastic PhD or Postdoctoral researcher with a heart for plant-soil interactions and food security, and interest or expertise in satellite-based remote sensing and modeling. The candidate will aim for (i) crop modeling at the field to continental scale, (i) satellite data assimilation using the AquaCrop model embedded within NASA’s Land Information System (LIS), (iii) machine learning to estimate soil moisture and biomass based on microwave signals (Sentinel-1, NISAR, SMOS, SMAP), (iv) quantifying the impacts of past climate extremes and projected climate change on crop yields around the world. The research will participate in cutting-edge and international research to improve estimates of agricultural production. You will be part of the KU Leuven Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Division Soil and Water Management, in the dynamic research group “Land Surface Remote Sensing, Modeling and Data Assimilation” (prof. Gabriëlle De Lannoy), and you will collaborate with the VUB “Water and Climate Department” (prof. Wim Thiery) and TU Delft (prof. Susan Steele-Dunne). The researcher is expected to work in a broad international context within the CROPWAVES (Belspo) project, collaborate with other researchers and students, and should be willing to contribute to open source code distribution (e.g. GitHub).

The pressure of population growth and climate change ask for innovative solutions to monitor crop growth at the continental scale. Remote sensing and high performance computing allow to address this need, but the interpretation of active and passive microwave signals in terms of crop development, and the implementation of physically-based crop models such as AquaCrop at the continental scale are only in their infancy. Our team is committed to maximally extract geophysical information from active and passive microwave sensors, and to advance the large-scale use of physically-based land surface and crop models at increasing spatial resolutions. In particular, our department has a long history of development and maintenance of the AquaCrop crop model. At the same time, machine learning using satellite data offers new opportunities to estimate biomass and these might help to improve or complement our physically-based models.

PhD Opportunity

Florida Institute of Technology, in partnership with UCF and FDEP, has recently been awarded funding to study the impacts of engineered ocean inflow on estuarine circulation and health. This is a multi-institution, multi-agency project with the opportunity to work with a team of scientists and engineers. As part of this project a temporary pumping station will be built and operated for one year, with the goal of assessing the impact of enhancing ocean circulation on the improving the health of the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) on Florida's east coast.

Starting in Fall 2025, I have an open PhD position directly related to this project that combines modeling and measuring the interaction between the coastal ocean and IRL a restricted estuary.

This project will explore how that interaction changes with engineered interventions, and how climate related changes to coastal ocean circulation may impact the health of the estuary. Our team will be deploying instrumentation including ADCP's to measure flow adjacent to the inflow pump station and deeper in the estuary, providing valuable validation data for a high-resolution circulation model of the region.

Applicants must have the ability to work in the US, either as a US citizen or currently hold a visa.

If you are interested, please send your CV and a cover letter including your research interests and experience to rjweaver@fit.edu.

Regards,
-Robert
Open call for 5 PhD positions at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
The positions are within the strategic research area Ocean and Coast, which focuses on societal challenges related to the open ocean, coastal areas with their fjords and coastal communities, rivers and lakes, the water cycle, and water more generally. The Arctic faces particular challenges that will also be emphasized.
Details can be found here: https://www.jobbnorge.no/en/available-jobs/job/277895/announcement-of-up-to-five-phd-positions
I believe hydrologists reading this newsletter may be or know good candidates for these positions.
When applying for a PhD position, the candidates must develop a project outline in close collaboration with the intended main supervisor.
The project outline must introduce a new interdisciplinary approach to the research question and societal challenge being addressed, as well as a reflection on how this approach contributes to filling knowledge gaps and generating solutions that can make a difference.
I am available to discuss research proposals related to water browning, a ubiquitous process that is raising concerns for its impacts on human water uses, aquatic ecosystems productivity, and the land carbon sink. The water browning issue intersects various scientific fields and is talked over by policy makers and practitioners because of its environmental relevance.
Leveraging expertise across disciplines (hydrology and biogeochemistry), we recently suggested that ongoing changes in the hydrology of northern environments are intensifying the export of dissolved organic carbon from landscape to rivers and lakes, fjords and the ocean, thus promoting water browning. I am available to discuss projects that builds on these findings.
The project may be also related to peatland restoration. Ambitious plans for restoring peatlands may indeed modify the way landscapes retain, turn and release water and biogeochemical elements. These changed conditions may mobilize the organic carbon available in the superficial layers of formerly drained peatlands, eventually altering (and - at least initially – increasing) the fluxes of organic carbon from land to water bodies.
If you are interested in the topics and positions, feel free to get in touch with me at stefano.basso@ntnu.no, attaching a short CV and a max 1-page outline of your project idea.
Thank you!
Stefano
