Ph.D. Position in Environmental Radioactivity at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville
The Donaher Lab at the University of Tennessee Knoxville invites applications for 1-2 fully funded PhD student positions beginning Spring 2025 (preferred) or Fall 2025.
The PhD student(s) will join the Environmental Radioactivity Lab in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, led by Dr. Sarah Donaher. Lab focuses include radioecology, nuclear decommissioning and environmental management, and ecotoxicology.
Students will have the flexibility to propose projects of their own interest that are relevant to the lab goals or work on existing projects such as
1) the role of microplastics as vectors for other contaminants,
2) metal mobility and bioavailability in wetlands, and
3) applications of biological tissues in environmental forensics.

Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Environmental Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Health Physics, Geology, Chemistry, or related scientific discipline
- Strong technical writing and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and within a team
- Willingness to conduct radiological lab work
Preferred qualifications
- Master’s degree
- Prior research experience is highly desirable (especially working with radioactive material or with analytical instrumentation such as ICP-MS and/or FT-IR)
- Experience in R or similar statistical software program
- Interest in applying for federally-funded graduate fellowships

Dr. Ravneet K Sandhu will advise the successful candidate, and the research project will focus on open-field small fruit production in Kansas.
The project aims to conduct a cultivar evaluation and optimization of the planting date for June-bearing strawberries in Kansas. All the research will be conducted at KSU Horticulture Research Station, Olathe.

We are seeking a motivated M.S. student to become part of a collaborative project between the USDA Forest Service and the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources at Purdue University. The student will use long-term data to study changes in forest types and the effects of fire on forest regeneration. Research will be conducted on the Hoosier National Forest in southern Indiana.
The position is budgeted for two years beginning in the spring semester of 2025 and includes a graduate stipend, tuition waiver, and access to employer assisted health insurance.
Applicants should have a GPA of 3.2 or higher. GRE scores are not required, but may be submitted.
Desired qualifications: an undergraduate degree in forestry, botany, ecology, plant science, biology or a related field; experience conducting field research; and interest in forest ecology and the response of forests to disturbance.
