MS Position: Using big data to model harmful algal blooms in Lakes Across the United States

The Data Intensive Landscape Limnology (DILL; https://bigdatalimno.org/) Lab in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife (https://lnkd.in/g-p7Ghxz) at Michigan State University invites applications for a thesis-based Master's student position starting January 2025 focused on the modeling of algal blooms and algal toxin concentrations in lakes across the United States. The Master's student will be co-supervised by Drs. Patrick Hanly and Kendra Spence Cheruvelil.

A graduate research assistantship (MS) position is open in the Fruit Production and Integrated Pest Management at Olathe Horticulture Research and Extension Center, Kansas State University.

Dr. Ravneet K Sandhu will advise the successful candidate, and the research project will focus on open-field small fruit production in Kansas.

The project aims to conduct a cultivar evaluation and optimization of the planting date for June-bearing strawberries in Kansas. All the research will be conducted at KSU Horticulture Research Station, Olathe.

MS. Position: Ecological Classification and Fire Effects at Purdue University

We are seeking a motivated M.S. student to become part of a collaborative project between the USDA Forest Service and the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources at Purdue University. The student will use long-term data to study changes in forest types and the effects of fire on forest regeneration. Research will be conducted on the Hoosier National Forest in southern Indiana.

The position is budgeted for two years beginning in the spring semester of 2025 and includes a graduate stipend, tuition waiver, and access to employer assisted health insurance.

Applicants should have a GPA of 3.2 or higher. GRE scores are not required, but may be submitted.

Desired qualifications: an undergraduate degree in forestry, botany, ecology, plant science, biology or a related field; experience conducting field research; and interest in forest ecology and the response of forests to disturbance.

Two PhD/MS Positions in Waterfowl and Wildlife Conservation at the The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).

The Lavretsky Population and Evolutionary Genetics Lab at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is seeking highly motivated 2 graduate students at the PhD or MS levels start in the Winter or Fall of 2025. The student will join a vibrant and growing group in the lab and research body in the Department of Biological Sciences, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Program at UTEP, more generally.

The Lavretsky lab is recruiting students broadly interested in population genetics, evolutionary genetics, and/or conservation & wildlife genetics. Our lab works from the field to the gene, and with a variety of taxa (i.e., birds, mammals, and plants); although, our primary study system of the lab has been the mallard duck complex. Our teams are currently working in the southwest (Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico), as well as Hawaii, and with opportunities for international-based scientific collection. In short, students will have opportunities for field work, molecular work, and to contribute to UTEP's Biodiversity Collections. Graduate students are covered by a mix of RAs and TAs.

- Knowledge of (and experience with) wild waterfowl systems
- Field Experience in capturing, banding, and auxiliary marker deployment among waterfowl or other birds.
- Experience in population genetics, evolutionary genetics, or molecular evolution and with molecular data
